Lol you can never have too much money
I see the 6950 is priced at R3000 and the 6970 is R4000.

I remember those days.....I had a ATI rage II+ and dreamed of having a voodoo IIStarBound wrote:Voodoo 2 didnt even have heat sinks.
Obviously I was very young (not even 10 years old) and did not have money (was not my PC either but later became mine in 2000) and spent more time playing with Lego...

Re: ATI... erm, AMD vs nVidia!
I played lego before the 1990s. Then they started limiting how the pieces could fit with each other. But it was like this:
3Dfx = Speed king
nvidia = openGL king
ati = direct 3D king
3Dfx just flat out went for speed and died because it didnt move over to the 32-bit and T&L fast enough. Nvidia was never as fast or detailed until the TNT2 went 32-bit at massive frame drops but the geforce with T&L and DDR changed graphics cards forever. ATI was your multimedia king with most cards coming with a TV tuner/in/out but even they were smart enough to move over to T&L and DDR eventually.

Re: ATI... erm, AMD vs nVidia!
My first proper graphics cards was a Riva TNT 16 MB AGP card...
I remember being apprehensive about it because of the price (cant even remember how much I paid, but I know it was a lot). But I thought Hey, I just spent R5000 for this Pentium III 550MHz PC with 32MB RAM and an 8GB HDD - why not go all the way....
I stuck it in and started playing Homeworld and was absolutely blown away by the difference between it and my old S3 Trio card...
I also remember being upset about its low benchmark score and spending days trying to tweak it, only to find out that my mobo's AGP slot was only 4 speed
Ah, the 90's - what a magical time!

And now an 8 GB memory stick is considered small.

These new Radeon 6000 series are so crap apparently. Yet more horrendous driver issues and the inability to do AA in certain things... Can anybody comment yet?

Re: ATI... erm, AMD vs nVidia!
S3 Trio seemed to be doing the rounds in all the pcs of that time. But yes Homeworld with no background and slow on software vs textured backgrounds with 3d acceleration.
The world cup was 1998 right? Owned a Voodoo 2 at that time and parents went to UK to watch rugby. So I asked them if they had spare cash if they could buy a voodoo 3 or homeworld. Got home and I got a 16mb voodoo 3 2000 pci and my brother got homeworld. I put the voodoo 3 into the home p166mmx for the time being because I didnt have my own pc and suddenly Tiberium sun that once ran like slower than a turtle suddenly played incredibly fast.
I cant believe all those games are so old. And voodoo 3 was also a 2d accelerator. No idea how they did that.
*edit*
The radeon 6xxx series isnt winning any awards.

I remember when I got my original Voodoo 12MB card, 3D only so had the external daisy chain cable thing. That thing was the bees knees at the time! Aaah the good old days...

Re: ATI... erm, AMD vs nVidia!
Yea, my first pc had a 200mhz MMX, 64mb ram (was my dad's and he spent a lot on it), 4.3gb HDD, Ati 3d rage II+ and a asus sp97-v mobo....and for the monitor a Samsung SyncMaster 500s which I was using until July 2009 and I replaced it with another Samsung (SyncMaster 2033sw). It is amazing that now even your graphics card has more memory than most people had hard disk space in the early 90's.Mystical_Titan wrote:And now an 8 GB memory stick is considered small.

Re: ATI... erm, AMD vs nVidia!
I should perhapes add that 3dfx cards had the longest warrenty ever. From the voodoo 3 series all 3Dfx cards had a 10 year warrenty. Last year was the last year you could trade in your 3dfx card if something went wrong.

Maybe you could get a top of the range geforce because you owned a top of the range 3dfx card?

I'm helping a buddy of mine upgrade from his 8500 GT to a GTX 460. He asks me how much better the new card will be.

That's one way to describe it, although it gives a slightly disturbing mental picture...StarBound wrote:Tell him its like going from being constapated to having uncontrolled diaria.
