I am going to go out on a limb here and ask...

When you were doing the downloads were you sitting behind a caching proxy? Only reason why I ask is because about 6 months ago I was trying to get a piece of software working for work and no matter how many times the devs were sending me the link it was always downloading the wrong version. Turned out our proxy had cached it hence the reason why I was getting the wrong file.

That is possible if he was using the university's internet connection. I know my university has a caching server.

The fact is he bought the key legally, so one of the first things I would have done is to grab an installer off TPB. No harm in that.
