Can you guys suggest good software I can use to do some sort of benchmarking on the new system? Something I can run and maybe post the results here...

I know there are many of these so-called benchmarking tools, most of which is probably useless, but I just want to make sure that I did actually get what I paid for! hehe...

But first I will run the same software on my old laptop so I can REALLY appreciate the diff - lol...

3D Mark 2006 as well as Vantage.

Basically the standard for benchmarking gaming PCs.

Which mobo did you get?

3D Mark seems to be the standard option. Or at least the most frequently used in terms of posting results here. Check out the Benchmarking section to get some ideas.

Has anyone used furmark or is it a temprature/noise test instead of framerate?

The mobo is an Asus (and I will know the exact model soon)...

It's an ATI Radeon 5870 (lol) - it says "vapor-x" on the side? Does that tell you what you wanted 2 know?

I ran 3DMark06 trial edition (latest version), and my results are:

That 100% stock - no oc. Not bad? Or?

(I am posting in the benchmarking forum too - added it here since you guys helped me thru the whole process!)

Very nice! Good score!

And the Vapor-X means it's a Sapphire card. Is it the 2GB version?

The 3DMark you ran is 06 though so its not DX10/11. But as for your graphics card I have the same one. It's reviewed to be quieter and 20C cooler than the standard cooler versions. You could always try Unigine Heaven if you want to benchmark stuff but your PC can run anything you throw at it except metro so there isnt a point in benching unless you wanna brag about numbers.

LOL!

I paid a good sum for it - and since I dont have many games (yet), my only way of seeing what it can do was a benchmark. I think 3DMark06 told me what I wanted to know, but if I feel like testing again, I would give Unigine Heaven a go - I actually have it in my download list already.

Excuse me for asking a stupid question now, but what is "metro"... (I would also like to see what this system CANNOT do  )

Metro 2033 is a game. But it seems ATI cards cant handle the highest settings on high resolutions. Maybe a future driver will fix it. As it stands its just 1 game though.

oic...

I also decided about 5 mins ago, to chuck my current 256Kbps Uncapped semi-shaped wireless internet connection (@ R850 p/m) and go MWeb adsl uncapped... Still deciding which package to go for...

The wireless connection I had for 4 years now, and 4 years ago the price was the same - back then it was a MASSIVE bargain - not anymore - and with this weather we are having in cape town, the signal quality brings down the line speed to around 128... I think it is time to make the move....

I decided on and applied for the Mweb Broadband 4MB ADSL uncapped @ R899p/m including line rental... After a month or 2 of seeing how that goes (and how it handles my p2p :o ) I might move over to the slower but unshaped packages... Fortuantely changing over to another speed/account is rather easy (especially while staying with same isp)...

I'm not a hardware guy, so I can't comment on the Hardware.
But why would you want to dual boot XP If you're going to run VMs anyway?

Excellent question - I realised that not very long after making the post... I just installed Win7 64-bit, no dual-boot...
