OT/ I never understand some people's hate of Steam.

I have been using steam for about 9 months now and have been very impressed with it. I am actually eagerly awaiting the local content servers.

I don't hate it. I just haven't yet needed it, and I don't intend to install it just for one game.

once you have steam and you get used to it then those weekend specials start to take a toll on your monthly expendable income.

In fact this weekend I bought Company of Heroes Complete pack off Steam for R93. I also bought it for Mr. Norris for his birthday.

I love the ability to give people gifts on Steam. Great for birthdays

I have read up a bit on this game... and I would absolutely friggin love to play it... but can't get it over my heart (or wallet) to pay $15 a month for the 'honour' of playing it... Monthly subs kinda wig me out....

Still... should I get over my little problem in the near future... I would love to join the the ZA Star Fleet... :D

Hey Vince

I used to also fear the results of typing in my precious credit card details but after months of using WoW and buying stuff on Steam I am over my fear.

I should have the client either this afternoon or tomorrow morning. The internet better be decent tomorrow or else I am "working from home". :)

I have no probs with the actually online purchasing part... but more the fact that you pay an initial fee for the game... and then you have to pay more every month just to be able to play the game.... That is a bit hardcore for me little brain...

Well to qualify that, you are paying for firstly for the game you buy, the client. The second cost (monthly) is for the privilege to play on a professionally hosted and maintained server(s). This costs a lot of money to keep up to an acceptable level of service (up-time). World of Warcraft servers have one of the best track records when it comes to up-time from own experience, something like 99.99% not considering scheduled downtime. You pay for that.

Free MMO's have a costing model where you buy in-game items for real money only from official sources out-of-game thus they recover costs and/or make profit that way. Wow and Star Trek are not selling any in-game items externally. You can obtain everything in the game via playing without spending an additional cent. (There is novelty items excluded from that statement, but those items grant you no in-game advantage, it is pure cosmetic or cuteness factor.)

err.. to qualify this further, hosting/bandwidth doesn't cost them anywhere near as much as they're charging for... the subs are being used for new development, which they traditionally recovered in the unit cost... which they're still charging full price for... which means the pay-for-use model is still a rip-off... i'd happily buy into this if
  • 1) the client were free and
    2) the monthly subs were realistically priced
as to paying for MMORPG subs, R100-R180 per month == rip-off regardless of how you slice it... even factoring in DR costs..

If the sub costs included future releases/upgrades/expansions, then this would not be a bad thing to consider... but, using WoW again, you still have to pay for the new expansions when they are released, ontop of your subs...

In regards to the statement about running on well maintained servers etc... Have you played Guild Wars? In the year and a half that I played it, there was no serious downtime, apart from the scheduled downtime for server upgrade/maintenance...

I'm not flaming at anyone, despite how it sounds, and props for having the willingness to pay over and over again for something that you have already paid for... Who knows... If I happen to find the R120.00/month lying around to play this, then I will give it a shot, and most probably become as addicted to this as I was to GW... :D

It is not a necessity, it is a luxury - hence, if you are willing to pay what they ask for what you receive in return, your choice. It remains a premier service, very professionally done considering their volumes. (In blizzards case any way.) I am in no way disputing they are not making money, but do they not deserve a roi?

I am definitely going to have a look at STO, even if it is just the free trial.

Sojourn, you just raised something very valid... I never considered the Free Trial period to see if how I found playing it... That might actually be the kicker to decide whether or not I take the plunge...

Fanx...

/OT Alert/

If I have the fully patched Steam version on my home PC, is there a way that I can copy that over to my toplap? Or would I have to re-download the patches etc from the Steam on my top lap??
