7900gt.... XFX or ASUS
If you made a good decision your card should last at least 3 years. The last card I bought before my GTX was in 2003 and lasted until FEAR, COD2 before I couldn't run everything maxxed out. A 7800GS should last him 3 years before he has to upgrade.

I also had a 5900. Makes me wonder if people really know what they are talking about when they criticise those cards so heavily. Granted they do suck at certain things, but still lasted 3 years before having to really struggle with detail settings. Fable is a relatively new game with good graphics and runs with absolute highest detail settings on my 5900 at 1024x768 with AA, AF and VSync. The only difference with the GTX is I can play it at 2048x1568.

Well as far as I know, the FX5900 was the only decent card in that range - but yeah I was happy with it until the end of last year, when I had to start running games at 800x600 or 640x480 just so that they could be playable.

FX5600/FX5700 weren't that bad, but are pwned by 9600/9700 radeons. Only the FX5200 was a real POS. The FX series has amazing OpenGL performance for their class. It makes me worry that ATI and MS are getting a bit too close for my liking. ATI does very well in DirectX and is being used in the XBox360, both made by MS. nVidia pissed off MS when they refused to sell them the IP to the old xbox GPU and are now charging them licensing for backward compatibility on the new Xbox360. I suspect MS intentionally tried to screw them with DirectX9 and FX series.
Well thats my paranoid conspiracy theory for the day.

Yes good point, but then again, gaming and GFX technology is advancing at sutch a rediculous rate these day the that will not be possible any more.Current GFX cards will be struggeling a lot sooner than in the past!!Hex_Rated wrote:If you made a good decision your card should last at least 3 years.
