First Fermi cards to be named GTX 480, GTX 470

Published: 3rd February 2010

This is all we've seen of a GF100 card so far.
Fans of baffling product naming decisions - having only just recovered from Apple's iPad - will be pleased to hear what Nvidia intends to call its next generation of graphics cards based on GF100, aka Fermi. As they follow on from the GT200 series of cards, Nvidia's new product range will launch with two cards, named the GTX 480 and GTX 470. No, that's not a typo.

A posting on Nvidia's official GeForce Twitter account stated "GeForce GTX 480 and GeForce GTX 470 will be the names of the first two GPUs shipped based on our new GF100 chip!" That leaves us us here at bit-tech wondering what happened to the GTX 300 series.

Nvidia is no stranger to inexplicable naming decision, having infamously re-branded its G92-based cards, with the GeForce 8800 GT becoming the 9800 GT, and the the 9800 GTX being rebadged as the GTS 250.

There's still no information on clock speeds or, more importantly, an actual release date, but at least those waiting for the next Nvidia GPU now have a name to put on their wish list.

Are you eagerly anticipating the new line of cards from Nvidia, or are you more cynical towards Nvidia's latest re-jig to it's naming strategy

The problem isn't the throwing, it's that the money doesn't come back after you've thrown it.

Quick Question, what do you use to control your Nvidia Fan Speeds? Friend has just gone SLI with 2 GTX285's(?) And is finding the software fan management lacking.

I just got my 5870 and there is a bit of a question when it comes to the fan with that aswell. The card has a tendancy to underclock itself to 400mhz while games are loading. The fan speed then also drops. This is meant to prolong the cards life and fans life but the timing isn't perfect. At timess when the card has been running at 100% usage the GPU can pick up some heat. The you get to a loading screen and the the card then underclocks itself as expected but the fan speed also drops. Then "bam" restart because the card is still hot and the fan speed drops. To me this is a big flaw in the card :(. Anyone know how the new nVidia cards will perform against the 5870 and will they cost around R4600 that's the big question.

You can control the fan speed manually from the Catalyst control center if its become an issue for you...

Set it to 80 or 90%

Thats what I'm doing ATM. I leave it on around 60% during gaming its just to loud at 90%.
Hopefully the 10.2 catalysts will sort that out. I'll see tonight :)
But all in all the card is a solid performer. Haven't had any issues maxing the settings on any games yet.

They're supposed to be available by March right? I guess I can hold off buying a new graphics card till then. Once they're out, ATI should drop the prices of their cards. Which means I should be able to afford an HD 5850

Yip. Was going to wait for the new nVidia cards, but they're going to take too long...

The new 5870s are coming out next month, the ones that support the six displays. They'll have the same specs, except for having 2GB RAM.
