GreyWolf, I know it's a bit dated, but the only question here is if it's better than the e7400?

I would say so.

I can't believe Intel is bringing out an i5 chip. What lunacy... a whole new chipset?

I recently had a major hardware crash on my current pc , and now I need to replace my mobo , ram and (coz it's old) my Amd 64 3500+ cpu.
I have always been a supporter of the underdog AMD but recently I have considered going for Intel.
I already own a His ATI 4850 iceq edition gpu , here are my choices for the rest...
Amd phenom 2 x4 945 cpu
MSI 790GX am3 mobo
OCZ reaper 4GB 1333 kit

or
Intel core I5 750
ASUS P7P55D pro mobo
OCZ reaper 4GB 1333 kit

Plz help ! They cost the same but which will be better for gaming ?

I'm no expert, but as far as gaming goes, the 945 can tag along wit an i7 920, amiright? I'd go for that one. (But then again I'm pro-AMD)

And welcome to the forums. You can introduce yourself here.

I don't think either would be better for gaming. Both configurations would handle current games just fine.

I'd go for AMD... should outperform the i5.

Well... if your willing to wait, wait for reviews on the i5. I absolutely adore my AMD Phenom II (It's wrong, I know. But I am a lonely guy  ) but I have to say that I am quite excited about the i5. I like the wait-and-see approach.

The waiting part is also the problem - just got the new Wolfenstein , and Arkam Asylum but nothing to play it on . . . Damn Intel for bringing out a potentially better cpu just to confuse me !

Core i5 will not be better than i7- and for that matter if the 945 can do gaming as good as an i7, then I don't see the point of i5.

Well, Tony. My best advice is then that you head for the AMD route. And then try to get the Dragon Platform... LIKE ME

Yeah, fact is, even if the i5 is better than the Phenom II, it won't be better for gaming.

Ok Thanx - I'm convinced - gonna go for the AMD upgrade now. Can't wait for it to be delivered. Gonna buy from Titan-ice , they're prices are good.

i would rather go for the i5. By the time the prices of the i7 8** has dropped you could just swop the CPU!
I already ordered my i5. . . .

I don't think you can do that. i5 is a completely new socket.

At launch there will be three different socket 1156 processors code named "Lynnfield". The i7 870 and 860 with the i5 750 one step down.

Take a look at this. The i5 750 is neck on neck with the i7 920! I don't think the i5 is a step backwards in performance, it is more like a step backwards in the price. With the i7 8*** on the same socket i think the i5 is a very good buy.

+1 for i5
