cm 690 mod (GT)
Re: cm 690 mod (GT)
I know where you can buy those vandal switches. They are made by a company called Bulgin. They are sold locally by Avnet Kopp (0114442333) But don't expect the price to be much different from PPC's

hey guys
i think today im going to try make a switch just to try it out
now ive been thinking about cable sleeving and i was thinking just get 2 packs of black or uv blue sleeving but thats just to............ er................ unoriganal aint it??
soooooooooo what im going to do is sleeve my wires with this
its corrugated flexible conduit. it will make it look a lil more mean imo.
oh ja and since my psu makes such a noise im going to be changing the fan, so im not worried about voiding the warrnty

i need to know if i can use this switch for the el wire (runs at 220v) but uses way les than 0.5amps? im guessing it should work but im worried the power will jump across the contacts
(el wire uses under 1 amp for about 120 feet) so im going to be drawing about 0.17 amps

Re: cm 690 mod (GT)
okay here are a few pics of the vadal look a like switch
those were just a test run
im still deciding on black plexi or silver aluminuim or steel
and the clear plexi needs to be 3mm not 5mm plexi
when i get autodesk up and running again ill do a nice design. all of this will be cut on a cnc miller

Love that idea. really think it'll look awesome. just try keep the switches as flush as possible. Dont think they'll look nice sticking out at all.

Re: cm 690 mod (GT)
okay guys this is a small update
going to be building my own cnc miller soon( out of printers and all) and that black plexi is definitly going to be metal (stainless steel or alu i dna yet) but i still need to find a way of mounting the switches. i wanted to use the same methode that are used for vandals, but where could i find a 25mm bolt that i can round off and hollow out???
well anyways
oh and where can i get a uln2003 and how much are they?

Re: cm 690 mod (GT)
okay guys got some work to do on my mod
firstly: might mod my psu and make it a modular psu. i will also definitely be using the flexible conduit (just need to get some )
ive decided that i might just scrap the el wire and return to the uv leds. but i need to find a place that supplies leds with a bigger viewing angle and ones with a higher lum intensity
going to be getting a few fans soon (they are tt but hey they have lowest dba and highest airflow. and a dual uv ccfl
anyways: my specs for the pc will soon be
amd phenom II x3 710 (probably at like 3.2GHZ)
either an asus evo m or asus m3a h/dmi mobo
2gb ddr3 1333 or ddr2 800
my old 7600gs (oced like mad)
250gb seagate hdd
and my gigabyte g lite cooler will get modded aswell
cant wait my pc should be here before the holidays and since then ive missed soo many lans. (frag lan is on Wednesday and my pc should be here by then if only i had tickets)
now just to get more cash sponsors???

Re: cm 690 mod (GT)
so i did some work today...........
here is the shot of everything i needed:
not much hey
switches and leds removed
i then gave it a litle bit of a sanding and started to apply the steel putty. i did this twice as i left a gap on the restart switch.
bezel drying. what you cant see is the big aircon fan thats sitting under the bezel to dry it (lol)
i then left it to dry for two hours in the hot garage and ended up sleeping for the whole two hours (which is weird because i never sleep during the day)
when i got back the steel putty lived up to its name and was as hard as steel. i then got to work with sanding (and i was lazy so i used my sander ) i used a 40 gritt, 80 and 100grit (i couldnt find the 300 and 600)
heres what it looks like now
still has a few bumbs in it so i will do it again some time (the steel putty i used was really old)
on a slightly diffrent note im still waiting for hardware to arrive (curses post office) and while i have been waiting i designed this
got a friend who can get vinyls cut and printed so im thinking of sending it off to him.
im also working on getting a sponsor or two, but im not getting my hopes high as it is still a tough time for everyone. i have dedicated the lower front portion of the case to hardware stickers and sponsor logos (if i manage to get one) so far ive got and asus sticker there and the amd sticker will be next
if anyone knows where i can get uv paint locally please give me a shout (both invisible and the visible kind )
cya guys

Re: cm 690 mod (GT)
hey guys
last night i was in bed and was thinking about the mod again.
i am wanting to get some uv ccfls for the inside of the case. but i thought about what is uv reactive and the answer was well............... only the fans. i then thought about watercooling. and on the tubes they have like a coil (antikink thingy) im thinking get a black antikink coil then put it through some invisible uv blue paint and wrap it around the black flexible conduit. when the uv light is on it should look quite sweet
i might end up getting a new fan controller (maybe something with an lcd screen ) so that i can use that drive bay panel i messed up (the one from the old fan controller)
well if anyone can find out where i can get a few anti kink coils please let me know (i kow ppcs has but it expensive to import)
EDIT: heres a fan controller thats fairly awesome

Re: cm 690 mod (GT)
decided to drop the uv stripes for now as i want to get the mod over with so i can concentrate on hardware now. but what i will do is bolt all the mesh panels on since i have broken most of the little mesh clips
im going to use those same dome nuts i used on the side panel but they will be shorter and im going to spray them black
anyone thing i should spray the nuts for the window too??
comments welcome (like always )

EDIT: the size of the pics were to small to see any detail
*waits for someone with a cm690 to spot a problem
the funny little circle thingys all over the place are the bolts

lol i found out that i got the wrong one
but it doesnt make a difference
the damn instructions for the cpu (its double sided and is almost a meter by a meter in size)
how are they ever going to know that i changed the cpu cooler????? and i didnt see anything about overclocking (must have something to do with it being a be)
stock vs after market
i still need to finish my lapping off with 1000 gritt
well thats all ive got for you guys today
should have something by the end of next week as my motherboard might be here and ill have my mesh bolted on. so i will have a big update next week

Re: cm 690 mod (GT)
The sketchup drawing looks great.
If you do decide to blacken the dome nuts, (and come to think of it, the allen(hex) bolts) I would advise that you prime them first, with a proper primer...not too sure which, but self etching spray on primer should do the trick, unless somebody else has a better idea...try to keep the threads unpainted though...
On the front besel and regarding the challenger stripes:
Are you going to paint that on, or use some type of pvc sticker?
Because the Hex fasteners are going to be so close to the edge of the besel, carefull not to overtighten them. I've had to do a similar thing before, and the fasteners cracked my entire workpiece
On the components front, you have some nice kit. I think with the comment in the manual on aftermarket coolers, they try to put off n00bs from fiddling or something, or maybe, they just can't warrant the performance of the aftermarket unit because it had not been performance tested by their labs...but it seems you have a decent cooler from a reputable manufacturer and it looks great
All the best,
LJ

Re: cm 690 mod (GT)
sweet i has a comment
well for the mesh im going to add some metal plates behind (the bolts will be like 1-1.5 cm away from the edge, bolts being 5mm)
going to pick up allen key bolts tomorrow as well as some plastic primer and maybe 2 switches
im just going to get a normal push switch and a rubber boot to go over it. should look sweet imo
o crud forgot i need to get more blue paint for the stripes lol. decided to drop the whole uv stripes and vandal resistant switches thing as i dont have much cash for the mod. and its also getting difficult (much easier to build a case from scratch)
i should have my motherboard by the end of next week if not earlier. then ill be posting some benchies !!!
