the media/gaming dual case mod

Post by prozac5000 »

Sorry about hijacking the other one :(

Updated the specs properly now

I'm so sick and tired of having my media and game spread out all over my hard drives that i came up with this idea:

I would use two computers in two of the same cases conjoined with hinges down the back for easy maintanence and a clip in front so that it locks shut the cases would need to be switched around though so that the two motherboards would face opposite sides.

One case would be for gaming the other for media
Specs
The media pc would'nt ned to be anything fancy:
1.6 Core2duo
1 gig ddr2 800mhz
128 ATI radeon 2200 HD
3x 200 gig Seagate SATA HDD's
Sound blaster Audigy 7.1 HD
Winfast Tv Card
Windows XP Media Centre Edition

The gaming pc would be a beast
3.4 Core2duo
3 gigs ddr2 800 mhz
512mb Geforce 8800GT
Sound blaster Audigy 7.1 HD
250gig Seagate SATA HDD
Windows XP Pro

I would build a usb dual kvm switch into the case for easy transferring between systems.

These are just rough sketches please excuse their roughness as i was learning while using the program

That's not bad detail considering how quickly you did it bud, just keep at it.

The thing is fairly big though, maybe you could scale it down or work out a way to run both motherboards in one case?

i was also thinking along the line of maybe using BTX cases (flat cases) but the space constraints are a little to tight.

If i did use a single case it would be flat i'll work on a design for that now as well.

I had a server case but it would not be able to fit two boards in it i tested it with some scraps in the office...other wise i could weld two cases together.....

Ideas people please cos i am going to do this in the next couple of months

just build a case to accomodate what you need dude. That way you get what you want.

Otherwise steal Dae's Pico ATX board and mount it in your optical bay

I would tend to agree with UrBaN, to mod a case to the specs you want, you might as well go all in and do a total custom build. Once my Server case is done i'm going to start on a scratch build.

So throw some ideas together in SketchUp, and when in doubt, ask for help.
