Would getting 2x4850 in crossfire be a good idea? Because the benchmarks of a single 4850 does very well against a 9800GTX...

I need AA and AF. Adds about 20% quality on the overall look. Depending on the game of coarse since crysis makes the system cry while CoD4 is still blazing fast.

Finally we see prices. Though it came in at R200 more than I thought it was going to be.

Unless you have a 24" 1200p or 30" 1600p display, AA is important. On those screens AA doesn't make much difference.

Here are some more benchmarks... Sorry it's a german site, but the game names (on the right) are still english and fps numbers is a global language
I am surprised to see how near the 4850 gets to the 9800gtx, even beating it on some tests. If the 4850 is starting on about R2800, and maybe less, would it be worth it to save a few hundred for very near 9800gtx performance?
In the past I've hear bad news about ATI drivers, is this still a problem?
And what about the new drivers for Nvidia that is suppost to make it a 9800gtx+ or something?

ATI have been plagued with poor driver support both in the actual script of the driver as well as the fact that they released maybe 4 updates a year (if we were lucky). But those days are over now and we can see the maturity of the development team starting to show as Crossfire scales so much better than SLi and there are continual updates for mother motherboards as well as graphics cards.

BTW price dropped this morning to R2499.00 on the HIS 4850 cards!

Is there a particular difference between the HIS and MSI card? Like performance, OC ability, ect. ?

Slightly different fan design but otherwise they have the same PCB, core and memory. So in essence they're exactly the same boards.

As far as performance goes the ATI 4850 is the better card of the two and does also support DX10.1 (for whatever it's worth). Another plus is the HD performance of the ATI cards.

Seems like the 4850 is soon going to become the new 8800GT in it becoming the mainstream gaming card.

I'll try getting a card off to PCFormat's reviewers so we can see what this card really can do.

BTW we're giving away a HIS 4850 to one lucky customer who buys any hardware to the value of R2K or more from Landmark in the months of June/July :)

Going from 8800GT -> HD 4850 isn't really worth it, unless you're planning to go crossfire. Then you'll see big boosts. Upgrading just one card you might see 5-15% improvement in benchmark scores, it's hard to actually see any difference in games.

Andy we somehow have to draw a line with the advertising, rules clearly states that No companies are allowed.
Other Mods/Admins please correct me if I am wrong, but we need a clear distinction.

Well according to the link posted by animal, to me the increase looks a bit more than 5-15%. Altough the 8800gt wasn't tested, it is about the same as the 9600gt, a bit more maybe. But I didn't do the math to check %, so I might be wrong.
But still, if I sell my 8800gt, I only have to cash in a very small amount for something that is better and with dx10.1 support (for whatever it's worth)...
