Video to PC

Post by F4741_3Xc3P710n »

Hi,

A friend of mine brought me his digital camera to put video on my PC so that he can edit it. I have a video in card and all the software. Only problem is, if I want to put the video on my hard drive, the lowest quality clip would put about 2 Minutes of footage on at 450Mb. How can I compress the video smaller without loosing the much needed quality. (File was in AVI Format)

Sounds like the software that you are using to do the capturing is what is at fault. I would look into getting better capturing software...there are loads of titles about but I know Ulead have a very good product for capturing called Video Studio.
Hope this helps

Some capture boards offer hardware-based assistance for compressing a video stream during capture. You´ll need to click on that little word ´Help´ to see if yours has that capability. For what it´s worth, here are some basic guidelines:
Before capturing, you need to select your frame size & rate, also your audio format. The higher the quality- the bigger the file size BUT the higher the quality of capture, the better the final result will be. Preferably keep them the same. If you capture on a lower quality/frame size/audio format etc then make your final ´product´ at a different size & different audio format, you´re going to be disappointed with the results. Video can eat up space so my suggestion would be to capture your ´raw footage´ directly on to a CD, then to work off that - only storing the actual files you want to use on your hard drive, so that you don´t clutter up your hard drive with stuff you don´t need. Final word: If you´re going to make editing part of your future, get the biggest and best hard drive you can afford, ´cos Baby, ya gonna need it! Have fun!
PS to Cammie: You forgot to say ´There was a demo of Ulead on a recent PCFormat CD´ Thanks, ´Loskop´ it does come in handy for compressing to M-pegs!!
