Ok people this is a difficult one so bare with me . Ive got Win2000 with only 32mb RAM so I really need to get more memory . Problem solved , I buy a brand new 128mb RAM . Not so fast .

My 32mb RAM is PC100 and the 128mb RAM is PC133 , and it doesnt work . Everyone I have spoken to has told me that the PC133 should work anyway but it doesnt . But wait theres more .

The first 50 or so times I tried to get it to work , nothing but errors , however on try No. 51 the stupid thing worked (there is a god) . The system worked through a couple start ups and shut downs but then ... Error messages again . I removed it and went about at a snails pace and decided to try again and ... tada !

For some reason or other it only works once in a blue moon , I can never get the thing to work always , it seems pretty unstable .

Now the thing that gets to me is that it probably isnt the RAM itself anymore , if it was the RAM then it would never have worked at all , so Im assuming its got to be something to do with Win2000 . The error message for those of you wondering is ..

device driver not loaded netb.sys / tcpip.sys / mrxsmb.sys / atapi.sys

normally one of those files doesnt load . If I leave just 128mb by itself I get

CONFIG_INSTALATION_FAILED

so then It must be the RAM ? I dont know what the heck is happening , but Im still stuck with only 32mb .

Any Ideas ?

Firstly, it is not a good idea to mix 133 with 100. Yes the 133 RAM will run at 100 if that is the highest it can run at but mixing the two does give problems (I am talking from personal experiance...sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn´t).

Have you tried testing that RAM on another machine?

Unfortunetly I dont have another machine to test it on , but surely if the RAM was OK I could run the 128MB by itself ? It would be alot better than the 32MB by itself .

Umm, maybe this is a stupid question, but can your motherboard support PC133 ram?

Surely you know someone who has another computer where you could test the RAM...

It´s just a hunch, but I would also suggest looking in your BIOS to see if there is an option to enable checking for parity errors.

But we were Dragons. We were supposed to be cruel, cunning, heartless, and terrible. But this much I can tell you, you ape - we never burned and tortured and ripped one another apart and called it morality.

Even if the board doesn´t support 133 Mhz RAM it should still run at 100Mhz.

I would get the RAM tested...before you start pulling your hair out.

I got the RAM tested by a guy at work and he said it ran fine . On the odd occasion that it worked for me with the 32MB there was quite a difference in performance , so I think the RAM itself is OK , but it just doesnt run by itself . And as Cam said , as everyone else Ive asked , It should work , but wouldnt run at 133 .

i change the ram in my machine at least monthly and i am running win2000 ,i have had only one 64MB dimm give me similar errors and it was 133 ram , that same dimm gives intermittant errors in other machines .... i rekon your ram has a faulty chip on it , get new one

Does anyone know of a place in the Roodeport area where I can maybe get PC100 RAM, every where I go they say they only make PC133 nowadays. If Im gonna have these problems and the PC133 will only end up running at PC100 speed , then I would rather save a couple of bucks and get PC100 , If possible .

Why waste your time...get 133 and when you upgrade you don´t have to go out and buy 133. Rather flog your 64Mb dimm.

Take your PC into a store and get them to install the RAM for you...that way you are at no risk if 133 doesn´t want to run on your PC.

If you are in Roodepoort go to Paragon computers in Wilropark. Get them to test the ram. Check your computer motherboard manual for the possible ram configurations. What machine do you currently have?.

I tried to install a 256 Meg 133 on my PII the other day and windows XP failed to start although all the memory registered during startup.

First check if Paragon computers can help you and then check back with us.

OK - Call me stupid, but I´ve got a new motherboard that obviously support PC133, NOW - How can I tell whether I have 100 or 133 MHz Ram chips ???? - Is there anyway that one can see it without opening her up and taking the chips out, if not - where will the information show the freq. of the RAM chip?
Well, you should be able 2 see the frequency (MHz) on the chips themselves. Usually it will say something like "PC133" for 133MHz. Otherwise, use SiSoft Sandra or any good system benchmark.

Sorry, no sig yet! Nothing comes 2 mind.

I had a similar problem, I had a 64 meg + 32 meg Dimm, both @ 100 Mhz. Worked just fine. I bought myself a 128 Mb Dimm @ 133 mhz, put the sucker in and my pc only registered the 128 meg and the 32 meg, take it out, the 64 meg comes back ?!!?!. Well I check what the voltage was on my motherboard -> 3.3 v, the 128 meg dimm´s voltage -> 5 v ! checked the other dimm´s voltages, they would run on 5v so, bumped the voltage up to 5v, voila all the chips work!! Just a suggestion.

i have no problems on my SiS mobo...........and i run 1 pc100(64mb) stick with another pc133(256mb)stick i have had absolutly no problems at all:) so try your system with the 128 stick only and then work from there.

while we are on the issue of ram:

which mobos will support DDR400 (about a gig of it) and a P4. my processor far outspeeds my RAM and its time to change that.

which is another thing, you can buy a new computer wit a 2ghz+ processor but they still prolly end up giving you like 256mb of PC133 SDRAM with it? wheres the logic???

I would also not recommend running chips of differing frequencies on the same board. I have had a similar situation where some chips would run together even with the freequency differences. My conclusion though is that maybe your board doesnt support. Maybe I missed it but what kind of board do you have?
