The PC was running ubuntu. The guy using it kept plugging out the power instead of shutting down.

8O ACPI issue?

also, did we try aptitude in place of apt-get?

Based on recent comments and trolls, I'd say jamin currently isn't fit to rip a slug a new one. My guess is he's having difficulty coming up with new reasons to defend his favourite OS (the one he gets paid huge money each month to keep working  ) and therefore is shy to show his face around these parts.

Or, as dae said...maybe he clicked Start.

which is always a bad start

Apt-get is a derivative of aptitude which is like "add / Remove programs" but on steroids. It accesses most of the packages on the web which allows you to browse through (read: search) and download and install what you want.

Pretty much without it, he can't install, uninstall, search, download or do anything with packages. UNLESS he still has aptitude which I doubt if apt-get is messing around.

Although this could all just be a joke and they uninstalled apt-get for a photo

not quite... apt comprises 15+ individual tools and was the defacto tool used from day 1 - aptitude is the new kid on the block which offers the entire lot in one package, along with some sterling package management functionality, (not least of which is the scrubbing of deprecated/orphaned packages).

aside from upgrading my install, i use aptitude across the board...

Ok, I was under the impression that apt-get was "the new kid on the block". Oh well, makes sense to include it all in one. We learn something new everyday

 I have a Gentoo installation that is currently running without GCC. upgrade of GCC went south as I had an unsupported build of a 64bit Kernel on a Dual Xeon64

Problem is I can't rebuild any of the installed apps for the custom Kernel. so I am sitting with an installation which I can not use. Have to re-installa the whole thing.

I guess an explanation is needed here from the horses mouth

I took that photo while giving support to my bosses dad's pc running kubuntu 7.04.

The main reason for the callout was that fsck found some inode errors on the drive and needed root access to repair them, and only I know the root password for security reasons (like rm -rf /*). anyways, after I typed in the root password, the screen in the photo came at me, I lolled at it and took a photo to share with the world. I hope that clarifies things abit.
rustypup wrote: 8O ACPI issue?
no, the user has this nag of opening 20 documents at a time and the pc just cant handle that much stress and takes a while to respond, then the user reboots the pc in order to continue his work. After 29 times the system then runs an fsck to check for errors. He said this is not the first time the pc have run fsck. It is however the first fsck picked up errors.

This seems as good a place as any to ask an Apt question....

To which directory does Ubuntu download whatever files one has chosen using Aptitude or Apt-get...yada-yada?

Also, where can I learn about the inner workings of Linux? Linux for Dummies and its kind focus on using Linux software rather than the OS itself. Online resources would be nice :)

either will dump the files into var/cache/apt/archives, or, if used in conjunction with synaptic or certain other package managers, /etc/apt/cache/archives..

wget will dump into the current directory..

@D3PART3D: it's a huge topic... best to zone in on something specific and move on from there...

the web has a tonne of information and tutorials available on every aspect of linux... too much, in many cases, to produce a sensible learning path.. a good starting point, (not the easiest), is the kernel itself, as the environment makes more sense when you understand the kernel's design philosphy...

one of my first stops when considering a project is here, but this is by no means the only one...
