Formatting a Laptop

Post by DarkRanger »

Hi guys,

I would just like to know if it is hard to format a laptop and re-install windows? Reason I am asking is because I am going to PE this weekend to visit my GF and her laptop's XP is giving her issues. I am going to format it and reinstall XP Pro SP 2 (which came with the laptop).

Now I have a lot of experience formatting a normal desktop PC and reinstalling XP AND Vista, but would like to know what is different between these two procedures, what I should be carefull about etcetc and also what to prepare before formatting the Laptop.

Let me know.

Thanks! :D

it is very easy.

First don't not use the copy of XP that came with the laptop if your going to install both os's.

Use other copies if you have to install both.
Install XP first then vista....

Really nothing to it

And make sure of the hdd you using and that your Windows install disc supports SATA drives... otherwise it might tell you on install that it doesn't detect any hdd...

if u use the cd/dvd comes with the lappy~

normally it will bring u to a recovery process~

just follow the steps and wala~

if u need to install something else other than xp, just prepare the drivers u need for that OS.

I only want to install XP on the laptop. If I use the disc that came with the laptop, will I be able to format from it as well?

depend how they design the recovery cd/dvd~

normally they only give full recovery option, put in the cd/dvd~ takes 30min~1hr doing nothing and watch it copying~

they do everything, u just input cdkey under the lappy and name~

some of them even give u option to fix boot sector, adjust partition size and stuff~

You can format during the standard XP installation. There isn't really a difference, just put in the CD and boot, follow the prompts and format the partition like you would with a desktop. I do a quick format usually but maybe you should do a full format if the laptops giving her trouble.

If Its the recovery cd then it should have them integrated into the install. If not then she should have a couple of other cds containing the drivers

depending on what make and model it is will depent on whether you can run a recovery or you have to install from an XP cd.

for example, HP has a partition on the hard drive that serves as a recovery cd so you jsut basically boot from it and it will do everythign for you. other laptops might have come with a recovery cd that you jsut boot from and they will do the rest.

in that case i dont think it has a recovery disk. if memory serves me correctly it should have a drivers cd and a seperate disk with windows but i might be wrong. that is just what i uses to do when i prepped the fujitsu notebooks
