AVG Free 8.0 launches April 24
Just finished downlaoding and installing the 47MB file and 240KB update file and it's nice so far. Nice smooth interface and already doing a good job.

Been Running AVG 8 Network for a while now. Its a lot better than 7.5 for Servers and Terminal Services environment! I wish Microsoft would licence their software the same as Grisoft, Alt-N etc. that way i'd buy Windows for 5 years, and would get XP, Vista and Win7.... but *sigh* why would they? basssturds
strange, I have run the updater over 10x now and every single time it cans at 340bytes remaining... also dont get faster than 20KB/s on my 4Mb/s line. oh well, will see later or tomorrow.
also had problem with the update, but updated manually the first update and no issues after that with updates.
my 2c
Been running AVG 8.0 for couple of days now.
Much shinier interface
Loads significantly faster than Anti-Vir and Avast. Also the update servers tend to be a bit quicker (a LOT quicker than the Anti-Vir servers).
Gripe 1 - you cannot totally disable auto-updates of virus defs and engine. This annoys me slightly but can be worked around by setting the update for 1am and not allowing it to check at any other time.
Gripe 2 - plug-in that checks whether something you googled is evil or nasty etc. also can't be completely disabled (well it can be but then you get 'AVG is in error state' message the whole time).
So has to remain enabled in AVG but then disable it in Firefox plug-ins. It is a nice idea but it nibbles at my bandwidth and in this country bandwidth is money so I prefer to not have it run.
Built-in anti-spyware is a nice feature, not sure how efficient it is but still better than nothing.
Has anyone had it pick up a virus/spyware yet?
My full system scan had it pick up loads of cookies but nothing terribly malicious.

There are 10 types of people in this world.
Those who understand binary and those who do not.

Under the "virus definition update schedule" tab, there is an option to "Enable this task". All you need to do is uncheck it, and problem solved.Screeper wrote:Gripe 1 - you cannot totally disable auto-updates of virus defs and engine. You can also turn off the AVG error states in AVG's control panel.Screeper wrote:Gripe 2 - plug-in that checks whether something you googled is evil or nasty etc. also can't be completely disabled (well it can be but then you get 'AVG is in error state' message the whole time).
[edit] - My mistake. You can't turn off the error states completely.
Nope, if you disable the virus database update, avg will be in an error state.Richard_ wrote:

Correct. Sorry, I thought you meant that you couldn't disable it at all.Screeper wrote:Nope, if you disable the virus database update, avg will be in an error state.Richard_ wrote:
