Do you not need to know the name of a program you wish to download for whatever operating system you happen to be using, young padawan?

LOL I use Google
Just type in the type of program you want (eg. DVD Audio Ripper).
I'm guaranteed to find what I want.

Anyway, enough of this now...

Come on dude
Here you go with your no research claims again

If you looking for a media player for example, you can head over Synaptic or Add/Remove Apps and type in a keyword and there you go

Simple hey?!
If you know the name of the app its also simple through CLI
I use Amarok for my mp3 files and syncing with my iPod

sudo apt.get install amarok
It compiles all the files for you and from then on its as simple as a click to get it started up

Same with VLC. I use that for my video files
sudo apt-get install vlc

Simple. No?

Cant you handle some constructive criticism of your favourite OS?

He's not being a troll, and he has just as much of a right to post negative comments about Linux here as you have to post positive ones.

Why don't you learn how forums work before making posts like that.

I agree. This is ONE place where linux needs work

Well, you can do it in Linux as easy as you can in windows

*******
Easy? Oh really now?
What command line rubbish did you have to use to get it working?
What obscure dependency problems did you encounter?
You will say none, but I know you had some problems.

I just use PowerDVD 7 and everything works with no hassles.
Protected discs? No problem, AnyDVD will take care of that for me.

Try seconds. Check

Now this is just rubbish.
Yet again, some command line crap or kernel update or whatever.

Really?
The only thing I tend to see on these forums are command line solutions to problems.
Heck, just trying to get a serial mouse working in Ubuntu requires an update of xorg.conf - what nonsense!!

Check.

Again, rubbish.

Anything else you wanna complain about with researching first?

You mean "Anything else you wanna complain about withOUT researching first" .
I've used Linux.
It's a nightmare to get stuff going.
I wana spend less time getting things to work.

I'm not even gonna waste my time replying to this.

Update

Post by shiv »

Yes, I am gonna try out Linux yet again!
Hopefully version 8 of Ubuntu will have something that will grab my eye...

Here's the facts:
- Linux IS SUPERIOR to Windows, because of the way it is designed, I KNOW THAT LOL.
- I'm pretty sure I could become a power user with enough time, I know that the command line is bliss!!
- If I could get EVERYTHING working the way I wanted it, as in Windows, with minimal fuss, I would give Windows the boot right away. Unfortunately that won't happen anytime soon.

So when I go about slating Linux, it's not because I hate it, it's because its progress is not as fast as I would have liked.
Given that its open source and 100's of thousands of people are contributing to it, I find it striking that it STILL hasn't overcome some of the most common obstacles (that make people stick to Windows).

Please don't reply negatively to this post, I'm not slating Linux, I'm just giving my thoughts.

Must admit im with what Shiv says.

Especially the part

shiv wrote:

That is really a pain, If you have no internet you probably cant install anything without updating some or other Deb package especially Ubuntu.

for Redhat based distros its normally a bit easier.

In the end Ol MS wins and will win for a long time.
Reason for viruses and stuff spreading on a win based machine is cus most people use it, Imagine if more and more people use linux and someone decides to make some virus for linux, how crazy it will be to remove it.

Jamin's just saying that 'cos right now he's on his Symbian OS Nokia replying to PCF posts 'cos his Windows PC is MIA again :P

Jamin, when are you going to come over to the dark side bru? It's fun here, and you can do more than 7 things before needing to restart :) not even installing a brand new, different colour, EVEN BIGGER flashdisk is cause for a restart :P

Now, I know what you're saying, it can't be possible. Surely a new device being plugged in requires a restart, we all know that. But no, I assure you, it is possible.

Did you know the Wright brothers designed their first planes on a Windows machine? Explains all the crashes...
[/ot]

OK sorry, back to the topic at hand. I will be trying out a few Linux OS' after I move into my new place (this weekend :D), and I'll be including this one I think.

I would give the Live version a try, but I got my machine running the way i want it to so not amped to mess it up (Again)

OT: Urban, you restart for a flash drive? Pffffft. It works perfectly without actually needing to restart. You just click no when it prompts you to

Was a joking reference to Restart 95, Restart 98, Restart ME, Restart 2000 and, more recently, Restart XP with Restart Reduction Pack 2.

Hey, be fair now. Xp was the best windows they've developed up til now and SP2 made it better. If only they had used XP SP2 as a base for Vista, then we wouldn't be looking for Windows 7 already... a couple of months after Vista's release AND after the first SP

I totally agree with you, XP is by far the best Windows eXPerience ever. SP2 was a lifesaver for XP much the same way SP4 was for 2k.

My point wasn't that Windows is bad, it was that anyone who worked in the IT industry pre-XP will know that restarting was the only guaranteed part of the OS. There was little you could install or change (on the hardware level) that didn't require a restart.

And THAT point was made to compare Linux which needs to restart far less often. Shoo..
