Cellphone as modem with Linux box
Hello Linux x-perts...
Ok, I have installed Feisty (Ubuntu 7.04) while I wait for Gutsy to arrive via our wonderful postal service...
In the mean time I am stuck in ugly mode without the proper nvidia drivers etc. but I'm not connected to the net...
I am using a Samsung F300i to connect to the net via XP presently and have been trying to get wvdial to connect under Linux... no success... the modem is found and the number is dialed and after about 15 seconds the modem hangs up... and then tries again... any suggestions!?

I cannot get my PC to connect to the internet. This is as much info as I can give now… more than I have ever given… help… please…
I am using Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon 64-bit. I am using a Samsung F300i via a USB cable with Virgin Mobile… I am doing all this from South Africa.
My wvdial.conf file:
Code: Select all
[Dialer Defaults]
Init1 = ATZ
Init2 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
Init3 = at+cgdcont=1,"ip","vdata"
Modem Type = USB Modem
Modem = /dev/ttyACM0
Baud = 460800
ISDN = 0
Phone = *99#
Username = A
Password = B
Stupid Mode = 1
Init3 I got from http://www.mybroadband.co.za forum...
Apparently I do not need a username and password (but wvdial needs entries there so I just added the A and B…)
This is the output I get when I run wvdial:
Code: Select all
thenailedone@eclipse:~$ sudo wvdial
WvDial<*1>: WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.56
WvModem<*1>: Cannot get information for serial port.
WvDial<*1>: Initializing modem.
WvDial<*1>: Sending: ATZ
WvDial Modem<*1>: ATZ
WvDial Modem<*1>: OK
WvDial<*1>: Sending: ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
WvDial Modem<*1>: ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
WvDial Modem<*1>: OK
WvDial<*1>: Sending: at+cgdcont=1,"ip","vdata"
WvDial Modem<*1>: at+cgdcont=1,"ip","vdata"
WvDial Modem<*1>: OK
WvDial<*1>: Modem initialized.
WvDial<*1>: Sending: ATDT*99#
WvDial<*1>: Waiting for carrier.
WvDial Modem<*1>: ATDT*99#
WvDial Modem<*1>: CONNECT
WvDial<*1>: Carrier detected. Starting PPP immediately.
WvDial<Notice>: Starting pppd at Sat Dec 15 21:58:42 2007
WvDial<Notice>: Pid of pppd: 6822
WvDial<*1>: Using interface ppp0
WvDial<*1>: Disconnecting at Sat Dec 15 21:59:13 2007
WvDial<*1>: The PPP daemon has died: A modem hung up the phone (exit code = 16)
WvDial<*1>: man pppd explains pppd error codes in more detail.
WvDial<Notice>: Try again and look into /var/log/messages
and the wvdial and pppd man pages for more information.
WvDial<Notice>: Auto Reconnect will be attempted in 5 seconds
Issues I think my be causing my problems connecting
1. I noticed this error message straight after running wvdial: WvModem<*1>: Cannot get information for serial port.
2. I also don’t know if my chosen user name and password could be an issue…
3. 64-bit OS issue?
4. I struggled in the beginning to connect in XP too… and then one day it worked… could there be a delay in connecting and how do I increase the time Ubuntu will wait before it disconnects (if it is my PC disconnecting and not Virgin Mobile)?
:-/

Use the program kppp. It comes with PCLinuxOS.thEnaileDonE wrote:Hello Linux x-perts...

Your modem should be /dev/ttyACM0.
Try it and see if it works.

Re: Cellphone as modem with Linux box
I will refrain (well try in any case) from installing distro's until I get one that I can connect with... but thanks for the advice non the less...shiv wrote:Use the program kppp. It comes with PCLinuxOS.thEnaileDonE wrote:Hello Linux x-perts...

When you attempt to dial do you see Connecting... appear on your phone or something similar and then nothing happens or is the OS just not seeing your phone?
If it does see your phone, why not try change the number you're using? Since *99# dials the default profile in your phone, with Vodafone branded phones, it trys to dial the Vlive account. If you have such a phone try change the number to *99***X#, where X responds to the number of the profile you're attempting to connect with.

... nope... as you can see in a previous post the dialing part goes smoothly... it is when it is right after starting a new pppd that it waits for 15 seconds and disconnects...

Got it !
Obviously you first have to set your config your connection (set the modem up)
Mine is set as follows:
My Location I have saved as N91, Modem is ticked
---------
General:
---------
Phone number: *99#
username: vdata
password: vdata
-------
Modem:
Modem Port: /dev/tty/ACM0
Dial: Type Tones
Volume: Off
--------
Options:
--------
Ticked: Set Modem as default route to internet
vdial needs a configuration file ( /etc/wvdial.conf ), below is mine:
[Dialer Defaults]
Init2 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
Modem Type = USB Modem
Phone = *99#
ISDN = 0
Username = vdata
Init1 = ATZ
Password = vdata
Modem = /dev/ttyACM0
Baud = 460800
To get the modem set up automatically is also easy...
Just go Terminal, sudo vdialconf and it will set your modem options correctly
then all you have to do is to go Terminal sudo gedit - gedit will open, and then from there you can open your vdial.conf file - edit your necessary values into there (tel number / username + password and then save and restart
dialing works by going terminal type sudo wvdial

... will try this ASAP...
I had a feeling my biggest problem is not having the correct user name and password... will have try vdata
(I just hope I don't run into other problems now as I am currently running UE 1.2... maybe I should revert back to Gutsy... hmmm...)
