Scratching my head. OC help.

Post by viceroy »

Okay so this is the story

E6420 + P5K-E + Transcend DDR2-667 ram = 3.84Ghz on Air (suicide benching on air)

So I upgraded my RAM

E6420 + P5K-E + OCZ Reaper DDR2-1066 ram != 3.84Ghz
Can just make 3.4Ghz

So I'm like WTF!? How can I suddenly lose my OC like this? The ram is cool and running in spec, the CPU and Mobo are the same so what's causing this? It has to be the ram but how?

Next up

E6420 + P5E + OCZ Reaper DDR2-1066 ram != 3.84Ghz

The mobo is awesome and has some many OC options it's almost scary.

So what can/must I do to try get back the OC I had before.

So far I've tried running the ram at 2.3V (max allowed to stay in warranty), CPU at 1.4V, all the rest is at stock auto settings.

I've also disabled the transaction booster thingy.

Getting very frustrated by this :cry:

I'll update this weekend, but even on the P5K-E board I had before, which did have the latest bios, it started giving me hassles when I put in the new ram.

why I'm stumped is because the ram is running within spec, so why would it stop me from getting so high again?

You might have already done this, but lower your ram speeds, by a lot, to take it out of the equasion completely. If it is still happening, it could be vdroop or something.

Don't think it's vdroop cos the system won't even post.

I'll try set the ram speeds lower but I don't know how low it will allow.

Thats the stock timings on the ram.

I may have some time this weekend (doubt it though) to have a bit of a fiddle, so we'll see.

viceroy do yourself a favour stay away from BIOS 0901!!! ASUS have fubard that BIOS. Dont believe me? Google it I updated to the 0901 for AMD boards and it killed my OC capabilities (had to go back to old BIOS to get it working again, I think the reason is because it has AMD Phenom update in it) so yeah try it but only after googling it :wink:

Thanks for the heads up...I've do some research now and see what the best OC bios is for my board

--edit

What 0901 bios are you talking about?
The latest bios I see for my board is this one

P5E BIOS 0405
1. Fix system freezes if been interrupted by USB devices before entering S3
2. Enable support for N/2 Ratio option
3. Fix system may not boot with total of 4GB of ECC DIMM when enabling Memory Remapping option in BIOS
