netwrok not working

I am networking an win xp and win 98 machine . They where working perfectly up untill today but now they don't seem to see each other. I have pinged the names and ip's no success. The cards and switch are working since the lights of the switch comes on and when the cards ping themselves they respond. Please help thanx.

I had this too, all I did was add IPX COMPATIBLE protocol and it worked, dunno if your problem is the same.

Tryed that didn't work. Anybody have any idea what I can do I have tryed everything I know but nothing works.

ahhhh.....

Try check that the subnet masks are the same on both computers. Are you using static or dynamic IP's? Because if you are using assigned IP's that could be the reason. You havent given enough detail but that may help. They should both be 255.255.255.0 - sometime it changes to 255.255.0.0

IP adresses are grouped in three different classes:
Class A:
The first octet has a value from 0 to 127 (default subnet mask 255.0.0.0)
Class B:
The first octet has a value from 128 to 191 (default subnet mask 255.255.0.0)
Class C:
The first octet has a value from 192 to 223 (default subnet mask 255.255.255.0)

A different class of IP and subnet mask will work, but sometimes it can cause connection problems.

Could be a software issue, have you tried to reinstall TCP/IP on the 98 machine?
How about repairing in XP?

Tryed repair in xp and in win 98 when I reinstalled tcp/ip now I can only ping the machine(win 98) by typing its name not its ip even though I have ip 192.168.0.2 specified it says ip unreachable. This is when I try to ping win with win 98 machine. Still can't get the machines to ping or see themselves.

subnet mask's are the same 255.255.255.0

if both are running dhcp

on 98 go ipconfig /release_all
ipconfig /renew_all

on xp go ipconfig /renew

have you tried un-installling the nw cards under device manager and re-instaling the drivers not just alowing windows to re-detect them but re-installing from the orriginal disks if device manager says that some files you are trying to copy are older do you want to replace themsay yes

Firstly, those people who use IPX/SPX should have their heads chopped off as it is the most obsolete Protocol existing on the planet. Blame Novell!!!!

Then, remember you can only have DHCP when you...
1) either have a DHCP server on the network
2) either have ICS enabled somewhere

So, reinstall TCP/IP on both PCs
then, login on the 98 PC with the same user name and password as on the XP PC. Then, if you want to share the internet connection make the server 192.168.0.1, subnet mask 255.255.255.0 and enable ICS.
on the 98 PC, make it 192.168.0.2, subnet mask 255.255.255.0 and set 192.168.0.1 as the default gateway and Preferred DNS. IMPORTANT: do not enter anything into the 'alternate DNS'

Restart, then ping, if it doesn't work, the WinSock.dll is corrupt, try using a NetBIOS app e.g. goto run -> cmd (command on 98 ) then type net view. If nothing happens, then there is another cause, else if you can seee soemthing, WinSock is corrupt, you'll have to reinstall it then...
