Wow 8O

Some of you are well paid jong!

I'm starting a new job on Monday, yet my plans to leave home must wait a little longer.

Went from sales rep - web designer - shop assistant - pc technician - printer (side business) - IT & Office Administrator to new post being IT Assistant. Its at an NGO, but there is scope for growth. (My journey took me from Cape Town - Nelspruit - Pretoria, I might add)

I've been in the unfortunate position of not being able to be picky. I take whatever I get. I have qualifications rolling down my sleeves, coupled with blood, sweat & tears experience. I'm in Gauteng, so this wonderful idea of being well paid hasn't filtered to me yet :(

One day I'll be able to breathe a little easier but for now I'll continue paying my dues.

So much for that survey :x pfft

just so i can add my 2cents worth...

i started as a CLO(Computer Liaison Officer) at a hospital almost 3 yrs ago and until the end of Oct 07, i have been paid crap for all the work i do.. this goes from being on 24-hr call for stupid things like "the printer is not working" to "the computer is not switching on" when most of the time it is not plugged in or something daft like that...

i learnt that through perserverance and patience, your 66% increase will come your way, as it did mine...

btw - i also got the PABX techies to teach me how to program the PABX for new extensions, etc when they came here, so now i save the company R4500 a month on a service contract to do things that i can do...

well, other good news is that it looks like i'm moving to Regional Office soon as well, then i will probably get to work with SAP (YIPPEE)..

keep your fingers crossed for me to get the post

they are correct that helpdesk staff do earn a mere R9500 pm.

damn i earned that at age 17! until i went afterhours !

600K anually i can do with! damn im only on 144K anually
wow, and now u are earning 12k annually? whats the point of the post?
Besides proper helpdesk staff should actually have a fairly broad and decent knowledge base, i have phoned help desk with problems and get a blank huh......um......let me refer u to...... frikkin useless

Honestly i think IT salaries are bloated... As a general most of the IT guys we deal with are complete idiots, who get paid a fortune but actually are useless with anything outside their "box". Ask them to come up with a new concept and they are screwed. I thought studying engineering would be the way to go, but we dont get paid near what the IT guys get.. (hence my current change of profession). This is a generalization ppl. so plz dont get offended if u r one of the few who can actually do ur job and a bit more.
Well. I have a degree in engineering and here im sitting in IT scraping together bread crumbs. Im waiting for Eskom to pull through, but ive already been waiting for a month for a follow-up interview.

At least im earning something (even if its under 5k/m) and not sitting on my bottom at home leeching off my parents.

I dont understand how ppl can live off under 5k/m and still have a car, house, insurance?, kids. Its absolutely ridiculous!

When i get my proper job i will get my Pr Eng and do an MBA... but this IT stuff is easy to pick up, ive been a pc enthusiast for a long time. Alot of it involves some thinking out the box, new problems everyday, new solutions need to be thought of. At least i got a chance to do some vb programming for a database...

When they say IT they are talking about the "dumbass techies" up to the elite coders and stats programmers etc. IT isnt just the guy who sorts out the pc lol...

I apologise for the long post...im bored in this IT job rofl (all the challenges are gone now) - im over it (IT)

How long have you been working as a dev? If it isn't long (less than a year), you should view your current position as an internship. I fully agree with douglash, having been in a similar position when I first started working, I saw my salary rise exponentially after putting in the hours and gaining experience.

You have to remember that in a job interview you have to sell yourself. This is something that most South Africans lack. We are all too modest to really motivate ourself and flaunt our skills. If you are to get a good job with the skillset you have, you need to flaunt your skills to the employer.

*Note - you have to do this sparingly also otherwise you come off as a know it all... :p
Be careful you dont put down skills that you dont really have. e.g. you have skills in c++ but you only spent 6 months on it, and that was just theory and you have no real world experience in it. You might set your employers up with expectations you cannot fulfill.

There are so many languages that i "touched on", completing a few assignments at varsity using them but i dont think it deserves to be mentioned in my skillset since i dont want to be held liable when they tell me "i thought you knew language x well" and id feel like an epic failure at life.

its been for 8 months now I think. but things have started picking up and now they want bigger better things. I now look after the intranet and am busy trying to design a whole new intranet with no training in web dev...

Said to my boss in a joking matter that because I do web dev I should get more his response: "Its IT related" so even if I go a year or 2 I wont get more for my efforts

but you are right I will take it as an internship...

Those figures are so arb its funny...

As a consultant I can earn over 300 000 per year with just 3 years experience... Those figures say nothing - How many years experience did they take that statistics at? How many qualified people are there in all of those countries to do that work?

Hell, with an honours degree you can start in SA in IT as 20 000pm, thats 240 000 per year... After 3 years working you will be well close to 400 000...

Figures are rubbish - gauranteed...

This is how they got the figures:

http://www.itweb.co.za/surveys/salary/2007/default.asp

Keep in mind they're actual averages from a sample 3,400 working professionals. Not recommendations or anything.

Yes of course, we must throw out a survey done on several thousand employees and accept as guaranteed fact what 1 person, who has just entered the job market, has to say.

Moses - They just took random survey - Year to year salary differs according to experience... Different companies...

Im not talking of what I can get even - Hell, browse around career junction and the likes a bit and see the salaries on offer with about 3 years of industry experience... then compare it to this table...

Who yanked your chain in any case? I dont remember dropping a 2c down your yaphole to get some random BS comment... Hell, I wont even TAKE 5c for your comments...

OMG. If you'd have bothered to look at the link Anakha56 posted with the same data, you'd see the median and maximums:

http://www.itweb.co.za/surveys/salary/2 ... =permanent

R200k / month for an enterprise architect.

True. I have thumb-sucked so many times in IT and most of the time it worked. I guess its more about your ego or pride and self-confidence. I know I can do anything, i learn very easily, but when they want actual experience you cant say that you have experience since you havnt had a starting point in that industry because they will only employ you if you have the experience. Its a roundabout thing, but once you get in, you are IN.

Ok slasher, say it with me now:

THIS

IS

AN

AVERAGE!

That's what surveys are. Averages. Gemiddeld as jy engels verstaan nie. And it is normally done within a group that has different statuses. So STFU and look at the AVERAGES!!

EDIT:

and if you wont take 5c of his comment, whats up with that specific post then. Just ignore it. It's people like yourself that give negative topics on EVERY DAMN topic that make these specific forums a huge pain in the *** sometimes.

Dark Ranger - Glo julle ALLES wat jul lees?

Want dan sal jy wragtig nog hierdie ook glo...

It might not be the best salaries that they show, but if that is average there are quite a few companies paying their people less than peanuts...

Wil jy vir my se jy glo daardie survey 100%?

EDIT - O look, I can also edit my post...

I explained what I meant behind what I posted... If this is such a horrible terribly bad place, why are you here? Im not the one spamming threads every day of my life, trying to add 500 posts to my count per day just so I can look cool...

I shared an opinion - The idea behind forums (discussion)... If you disagree with it - dont get personal, either ignore it or DISCUSS it...

Who relieved himself in your cup of coffee this morning?
