Backdoor viruses???

Post by Elvis »

Can somebody tell me what a backdoor virus does exactly. I got infected two days ago and I´ve been in hell since. It infected my system files (system32.exe) and norton´s can´t remove it.I had to format.

How can i prevent from getting it again, or disinfect for that matter?

I´m running Windows XP version2002 sp1

A backdoor virus, like the name implies, allows someone else access to your PC, complete control and access to everything.

Most Antivirus do pickup and remove Backdoor virusses - it depends on which one you got, how new it is, and how new your virus definition files are. It´s a good idea to regularly visit the website for your antivirus software and download the latest Virus definition files.

[ Edited by OnlyOneKenobi On Date
May 23, 2003 ]

I had the exact same thing, Snipeers. I went out to a club called Gandalfs in Cape Town one night, and then next thing I know I wake up next to this...um.....lady named Brenda, and Doc says I´ve got a backdoor virus! So youre in luck, just rub cream on it twice a day and have lots of fibre in your diet to avoid unneccesarry complications.

To be pedantic (forgive me), it sounds like what you were infected by was a trojan. Trojans aren´t defined as viruses as they don´t replicate, but this isn´t to say that some viruses don´t contain a trojan as part of their payload - a multi-vectored attack is becoming more and more common these days.

As OnlyOneKenobi said, keep your AV software up-to-date - always. I´d suggest you also start looking into using a firewall - and making use of regular backups

[ Edited by Thrall On Date
May 23, 2003 ]

Snippie, You sometimes have excellent ideas and that is certainly the best so far! I´m so tired of my frog-faced avatar - sometimes I look in the mirror to make sure I´m not beginning to look like that in real life!
before scanning your system with your anti-virus software, disable the System Restore utility first. in XP, right click My Computer > Properties > System Restore Tab > click Turn off System Restore, apply the change and restart your machine. this will clear all of your System Restore save points and remove all the files that have been backed up, including trojans/viruses which have infected your system. after checking your system, re-enable the feature.
