Hardware specs for a new computer - what do you think?

Post by angel666 »

sup guys

i need advice. i got a pretty crappy pc at the mo (P4 3Ghz, 768mb ram, 160Gb seagate, Ati RX9250 etc - u get the picture) cos ive been saving up like a mofo n havent upgraded in a while.

So i got about 10k - 15k to splash out on a new pc...what should i go for ?
so far i have this in mind :

Case : Antec Sonata II (with 450W PSU)
Cpu : E6850
Mobo : Asus P5K IP35 Motherboard
Ram : Kingston 2Gb 800
Hdd : Seagate Barracuda 350Gb/500Gb
Gpu : Geforce 8800 GTS 320Mb

Monitor, kb, mouse etc i can handle on my own
i just wanna know if this setup would be ideal for gaming.
i know Quad core is quite good but Dual performs much better gaming wise. plus i intend getting a Quad next year when there more of them to choose from.
i might overclock

I would go for ddr3, For 15k I would build my rig around the ram. Otherwise you will just have upgraded and they release a new socket CPU that only supports dd3 and you will be forced to upgrade to ddr3 anyways.

It could save you from "saving like a mofo" in the future! :P Also try to shoot for a 640mb gts 320mb. Or a X2900XT

Shop around, there's some great deals in some online pc shops.

Going ddr3 now is FRIKKING dumb.
I don't understand this statement, do you say that because DDR 4 is coming
Or is DDR3 slow ?
I thought that newer is better ? - really make me understand here that having DDR2 with a slower speed is better than having DDR3 ?
Please don't flame I already have heartburn

So DDR3 is basically the same failure as the RIMM modules from back in the day ?

Remember when ddr2 just came out? 667 sticks rocked. Now I am running 1200 with my sticks. Its not worthwhile to get them atm when in a few months time, we will have ddr3 with MUCH tighter latencies and higher speeds, for cheaper.

The prices on DDR3 is also very steep.
Hmm, the setup seems very nice.
