Designing a mod in Sketchup

Post by feo »

OK, this question is directed at DAE. Actually I've only seen DAE draw sketchups of his mods but anyone that's used Sketchup to preplan their case mod can also post here.

How long does it take to draw the Sketchups?
How long did it it take you to learn how to do it?
Do you have some sort of qualification in CAD or technical drawing?

When I have free time I also wanna try my hand at modding cases but I'm a perfectionist freak so I HAVE to preplan the stuff and draw it in Sketchup, that's why I'm asking.

:D

Q1. How long does it take to draw the Sketchups?
Q2. How long did it it take you to learn how to do it?
Q3. Do you have some sort of qualification in CAD or technical drawing?

A1. Well... depends on your skill ?
A2. Well probably takes a day or two to get used to all the commands ?
A3. Well... DAE probably has some schooling in TD?

Scetchup is really easy guys :)

1. Depends on how much experience you have and how much detail you want to draw. Google some tutorials, they will definitely help you a lot!
2. It took me a few days to master the basics, and after a year of using it I still learn new things, one will never know until you try.
3. I do Tech Drawings at school, so I guess that did help me a bit, but as far as I know DAE JA VOO doesn't have any experience what so ever and he's making some great models. Just start using it, and use tutorials or get someone to explain it to you in person.

Yeah well I have Sketchup and I've watched some tutorial vids but I know that's definitely not enough info to draw a case mod. Like for example, the fans, how do you do that? It's not just blocks that you push and pull to change sizes.

Also, DAE, are you sketckups to scale i.e. do you use exact measurement? Or is it just the general shape? Seems like a dumb Q I know, I'd assume it is exact so that you know if all the parts would fit, but I have to ask.

Well, the one i did for Endorphin, this one:

Took me about 20 hours to do, more or less.

Took me about 5 hours to get it all down. Sketchup is so frikken easy, so mastering it is a piece of cake. (mastering it enough to design mods, that is :P )

None whatsoever. In fact, i think Sketchup is the first CAD app i've ever used.

And yes, my drawings are 100% to scale, down to the last .5 of a millimeter.
That guy that used to mod cases. Now I take photos. True story.

Thanks, saw that over at bit-tech :) . So do think the non-pro version of Sketchup is sufficient to model the case mods?

Also, got any links to written/video tutorials? Stuff that you maybe found helpful?

I use the normal version, though I still use v5 of Scetchup and not v6 as it feels a lot different, you won't know the difference though :P

I got some Tut's with v5, I'll check at home if I can somehow retrieve them and if I can I'll host it and post the links here :)

Well thing is I want to LEARN to draw the stuff from scratch :D . Well doesn't sound too bad, I'll have a crack at it once I'm done with my other obligations.
