Cool! Glad you got it working. That thing must be spinning at one helluva speed. What is the motor rated at?

Imagine you used a 10000rpm drive's motor...

I have no idea what rpm it's doing, but it's at least 5k. As it is it pushes a nice amount of air. If I can get another platter I'll make a fan with a more aggressive pitch and see what it does.

Yeah, after I started it for the first time I thought "hmmm. if I made the platter have a serrated edge...."

It's mounted on a old modem's bracket, which I screwed to the pcb. But I'll make a proper frame if I can get my hands on some metal.

You'd need a proper propeller to get it airborne.

If you could power it with some sort of light weight power source and build it into a rc plane with a good propeller it would fly.

EDIT: I'm gonna build another one from a different motor. I'll take more photos then.

The one I'm gonna use now has two platters, so I might just make some type of saw blade as well.

So, I was playing again this weekend. And took one 120mm Coolermaster Tri-blade and ripped it apart. Then I proceeded to make a converter which would hold the fan blades to the hdd motor. I then went to mount the motor to the fan chassis. And voila. (Ignore the white specs on it, was a failed attempt with some UV chemicals)

Some AV goodness.

First up see and hear how it spins up and down. Notice how it kicks back and forth: (3gp player or phone required)
http://files-upload.com/339148/01-07-07_2332.3gp.html

Look at how it blows the curtains.
http://files-upload.com/339153/01-07-07_1324.3gp.html

And finally listen to how it sounds, Notice how the noise from my Vapochill Micro gets drowned out by it. (AM%R player or phone required)
http://files-upload.com/339157/01-07-07_2334.amr.html

Now I just need someone to help me out with some smaller, circuitry so it can be run like a normal fan from 12v and be volt throttled.

So? How fast does it go? That motor seems to fit perfectly :)

I guess anywhere between 5700 and 7200 rpm. I don't know what rpm the motor is supposed to be. Like it is now it creates about the same wind speed as my desk fan at top speed.
