Spider - what type is this ?
I figured this was a baboon spider :-
Anyone know what type it is ?
Very placid, body about the size of a R5 coin, with legs, it's diameter is around the size of a hand.
She was in my bathroom this afternoon - evidently just for a visit. she outstayed her welcome, so I chased her out the window.

wow !
Was that not the reaction I figured I'd get !
First off, I respect spiders - I'll get to that right now.
Secondly, she showed no malice toward me at all.
I coaxed her out the window with the end of a broom, very gently.
She complied and was quite honestly very scared.
A totally placid creature, not in the least interested in myself.
I promise you now, I could've held that spider in my hands carefully, but there's every chance it would've died from shock had I tried - no sh1te - just ask someone who knows spiders.
You want a fly free house ?
Or maybe less mozzies ?
How about the fact that spiders are more prevalent in your home insects ?
Spiders are great, they control the insect pests.
The one above, however, is now in the garden where she belongs !

That spider was pretty big for a Gauteng bloke - I know you guys get freakin' big spiders and insects by the coast for sure !
I'll say he's the biggest spider I've seen in Gauteng for about 15 years.
I've seen similar sized spiders in KZN - but all creepy crawlies are bigger on the coast !

Me still, don't like em.
I got a fan that keeps all the mozzies away. Doom for flys.
I would have shat a brick if that thing was in my room!

My philisophy towards spiders nowadays is that if they don't bother me then I won't bother them.
But I do consider them coming into my room and sitting on my wall above my bed to be bothering me.
I've never had one that big in my house. I've seen on my switch box outside my backdoor one night that's body was I'd say 8cm long and probably 6 wide, 2 or 3cm high. Was about the size of my hand including it's legs.
I've heard big spiders like that live in your roof and garden. After I heard that I was very reluctant to go back into my roof when I needed to place some network cable...

Better get used to the fact that spiders are more prevalent than insects then.Azgard wrote:My philisophy towards spiders nowadays is that if they don't bother me then I won't bother them.

I just figured out what that big girl is going for - crickets.
I moved into my place exactly one month ago and I must say, this new place seems to be a cricket haven insect wise.
The perfect place for a big bottom spider like the above.
I'm going to invite this spider to stay - I reckon she'll keep the insect vermin population in check !
Well at least they have a website for those whims! That makes it much more understandable now!bb_matt wrote: I often take photos when I get a whim, it's fun.

Anyway, the creepy crawlies are bigger at the coast, well since they are the older smarter ones! They're the retired ones who left the fast pace of gauteng after many years of dangerous scaring and decided to settle on the coast!
Oh boy, sometimes i don't know where in the hell i get these things!

bb - It may be a rain spider and not a baboon spider. Its legs look a bit long for a baboon spidy but it may just be the angle of the camera.
Either way they're both harmless. They're both belong to one of the most prehistoric spider families alive today. Both have downward facing fangs (as a opposed to the horizontal fangs of the more 'modern' spider like a black widow, crab spider etc..).
They usually use power to overcome they're victims (hence the lack of dangerous venom), so they have enlarged fangs although they both really have to be provoked for them to use em on us.
I get loads of baboon and rain spiders in my house (near Durban) and they generally are quite happy to be coaxed into a bucket and taken outside.
Nice to see there are people who resist the "squash em" urge

There are 10 types of people in this world.
Those who understand binary and those who do not.
