Apple announces Windows browser

Post by Nomadic2Duo »

Apple developers conference
Thousands of developers are attending the conference
Apple has launched a version of its web browser Safari for Windows, competing head to head with Microsoft's Explorer and Mozilla's Firefox.

Chief executive Steve Jobs said Apple "dream big" and wanted to expand the 4.9% market share Safari enjoys.

Mr Jobs was speaking at a conference of developers for Apple products in San Francisco, California.

He said Safari was "the fastest browser on Windows", saying it was twice as fast as Internet Explorer.

A test version of Safari 3 for Windows XP, Vista and Apple Macs running OSX, is available for download from the Apple website. Apple is hoping to replicate the success of iTunes, which has proved enormously popular on both Macs and Windows machines.

"We think Windows users are going to be really impressed when they see how fast and intuitive web browsing can be with Safari," said Mr Jobs.

Mr Jobs used the conference to lift the lid on new features of its forthcoming operating system (OS) for Macs, called Leopard.

Ok, no offence to Apple and their fans, but the only reason anyone would use iTunes on Windows is because they own an iPod. I do use it for this reason and it is slow, clunky and a system hog. I'd much rather use media player.

For this reason I struggle to see Safari being any better, but hey I'll give it a try.

Interesting. I take anything in a blog with a bucket of salt, and it must be borne in mind that this IS a beta.

According to the larholm link OS X has a history of security vulnerabilities. It was my understanding that Mac's are supposedly more secure.

MrDevil 909 I think Mac is a lot more secure. But I think they mean with stuff like viruses, trojans and key loggers. I can't see that any company will ever succeed in creating a "safe and secure" browser.

macs are for people who need help tying their shoelace... just because marketing says "secure" doesn't mean it's true...

seriously... check their adverts and tell me who you think it's aimed at.. "Like, there was, like, a power failure and i , like, totally lost all my work! so now i use my apple, because it's, like, waay better."

I agree the adverts are definitely aimed at uneducated computer users.

Using Safari at the moment. It looks good and is VERY quick. But I don't have any plug-ins so that could account for some of the speed difference.

Needs a few things to be relearned, so I think I'll stick with Firefox, at least I know it is somewhat secure.

I'll give it a try when my internet is working properly again.

(Bloody SAIX down for me...)

I'd take anything Apple's marketing department says with a grain of salt.

Personally i think that the reason iTunes is 'enormously popular' (other than the iPod reason) is that most people need quicktime at some point and don't realise they are getting smelly old iTunes at the same time. They just hit the download button without reading further down the page where the option to download just quicktime is hiding.

As for Safari, i will try it out this weekend.

What sane person would use Quicktime? There are better alternatives that don't take over your computer like a virus?
