Novell and windows
i get ips from a server which provides internet access using novell. the server is located in another company. I want to have a small network sharing files and printers but if i share my stuff, will the users on other networks at the servers location be able to use my stuff on the network due to the fact that we are all issued ips from that server?

Hmmm interesting one Security on Novell.
How is the whole system set up? You got a win box that connects to a ??? server and obtains an IP in that way. Now you want to install a network on your side and still have that link to sync with the IP right?

Eather one or a collection of these products will be able to help you
For protecting the borders. For your purposes you would like to use this as a reverse proxy. If you use iChain you will automatically be useing a flavour of this which will give you access all of the resources where your user object has rights.
Novell BorderManager
For assigning rights to those who have access to the in or outside.
Novell eDirectory
Internet authentication to your system. Verry flexable, scalable and secure. Uses eDirectory for authentication matching purposes.
Novell iChain
All of these can be run on SuSE. And they are available for download from

Yeah better in terms of Graphical User Interfaces. But they are also much slower, more buggy, less stable and far behind in terms of security.
I have a NetWare 6.5beta box sitting in StatsSA's server room. The server is on their internet line and it is not even behind a firewall or something. Ppl have tried to hack it and they have failed. The way I know ppl tried to hack it is cuz there is a company that monitors the traffic for us.
Oh yeah and viruses does not have a hold on a NetWare box. Also you say you have always stuck with linux/unix well now is your opportunity to download Novell Enterprise Linux Services for free off their site (It comes with a SuSE 9 distro seing that they baught SuSE for a crisp $300 million).

Service Engineer ...... That would be something like a contractor that does maintenance. Service = ppl related problems.Soap wrote:Ruad, you just like NetWare because you are one of their service engineers
I am a Systems Integrator and I my work involves delving a bit deeper into their products than the average System administrator (If you catch my drift).
And know it is not just cuz I am one but rather because I have alot less problems with Novell's software (NetWare & SuSE) than I do with Mickysoft.

There is no company in the world with a usercount of more than 2000 that still uses a Unix/Linux or Mickysoft server to log into. Except for Mickysoft that is.

I do not want to quarrle about this but it is a fact that a NW box is by far the most stable and secure. I dare you to try and hack the www.itfg.gov.za webserver. It is a beta of Netware6.5. Yes not even a full release. If you can hack it I will by all means change my opinions but in the meanwhile I know what works and what not. Also I know for a fact that Novell has had 80% more lisence sales in the network user department than all the competition combined.
