Vista Ultimate x86 vs x64

Hiya guys,

I recently put Vista Ultimate x64 on my pc, and while everything works, not all the software installs.

For example, everything that came with the motherboard, nVidia has no teaming software in the x64 drivers etc.

So, I want to know, is the x64 version worth it? Is there a huge performance gain or anything?
Or should I reformat and put on the x86 version?

At the moment the 64 bit version of Vista is a nightmare. 32 bit is the only way to go at the moment...

I agree. Load 64 bit and be virtually guaranteed that most of your stuff won't work properly...

HEy man. I traced around 99% of my problems back to Me using Vista Ultimate 64BIT, and not 32BIT.

I bought 64 bit, thinking it was gonna rock, but infact it threw me with a rock

. LOOOOL!

This might be a noob question but where do you specify which version you want to install?
I have Vista ultimate and have 64 bit CPU but when i installed it it only installed the 32 bit version. I will probably keep it 32 bit just want to know.

Ultimate comes in a 2 disc set. One disc is 32bit, and visa versa.

It depends whether you have a retail or a dsp copy. Retail ultimate comes with a 64 bit and 32 bit disc but dsp you have to choose between the 2 versions. Also for all other retail versions you can order a 64 bit disc from MS for R96.

What are the pros and cons of 64bit vs 32 bit? They would not make 64 bit if it did not have some features that made it different or better (that is other than giving you nightmares)

How many out there are using XP 64bit and loving it?

Who has the bucks to fork out and buy a second copy of Vista?

None of us, which is why we (a) purchased the 32bit DSP or (b) purchased Ultimate iot play with both.

64bit takes forever to mature. It's no-one's target market as far as drivers are concerned.

Being a brand new OS with an existing lack of 32bit driver support, going 64bit is really, really a very bad move for any comprehensive pc user.

A year from now problems will be sorted sure, but until such time, have fun.

These problems are the reason I bought a retail copy of vista home premium and not dsp. I now have the 32 bit and 64 bit disc. DSP is cheaper but retail is the safe option.

EXACTLY

I bought the retail version of Vista Ultimate. It wasn't cheap, but with this set, i have both 32 bit AND 64 bit DVDs, as well as the ability to take Vista off one machine and install it on another, as i choose.

DSP is supposed to let you chose which version you want... From the same DVD.

Depends on which Vista version. Vista Home Basic x64 has only that on the DVD disc a\ccording to the packaging.

No it doesn't. since they have 2 disc's a 64 bit and 32 bit one. If you buy dsp you have to pick one. with retail you get both in the box with ultimate and with home premium and business you just order The 64bit disc from Ms for R96.

Sorry - I am referring to DSP version which I have. Home Basic x64 had only a single disc in the box with the inscription that it only contains x64 version. It also has the option to upgrade from Basic to Premium if you pay in online and get a different serial number but it is still x64.

I have the option to purchase a 32bit Vista Premium DSP to replace my 64bit DSP (no refund on the 64bit DSP though). At about a quarter of the price, should I do this, or go with an hellish expensive retail package option.

False, offer is only for retail versions.

Minus the hype is there any REAL reason for getting Ultimate over Home Premium especially if the only thing that you are going to use it for is gaming, internet and multimedia?

No the difference between Ultimate and home premium is that ultimate has better security and networking features and that it has some ultimate extra games like hold em poker but else than that if you just want gaming and multimedia home premium is fine.

I wanna buy Vista Ultimate. with regards to the followng quote, with the retail version you can uninstall from one pc and move to another. can this not be done with DSP versions ?. I wanna install on my notebook, but if it doesn't run nicely i wanna move it to my pc and put xp pro back on my note book. Just wanna make sure of what i can do before i purchase.

the quote is not entirely accurate... IIRC, the original user can opt to change the installed machine once only. thereafter, the license cannot be moved back again, (well, not legally).. <edit>this refers to the DSP flavours</edit>

the DSP version lives and dies on the 'original' machine.

i've only just spotted that ultimate is limited to max 2 CPUs - wonder what this means for quad-core?

The 32bit DSP license still works for 64bit, so if you can find someone with a 64 dvd, it should work.
