linux only needs a few thing to kick serious bitmaps 1.File naming conventions
2. User friendly
3.Gaming compatibility (not just ports for sertuin games but over all compatibility)
4.User frienly
5. User friendly
6. And just perhaps if possible direct x compatibility (curse curse microsoft) all heil opengl 1.3 and 2

Woo Hoo Lindows is here..Ah well it is a start for the non-technical Linux user...but Ouch $$99 ??

Nope no ´free´ versions of this baby...This is a full on commercial offering much like Suse 8 and seems it will stay that way. Remember its still costs a heck of a lot to develop and support any software or OS. And in relative terms it is cheaper for the Yanks..maybe not so much for our Rand though.

Guess you will have to get the more technical stuff like Red Hat, but do not fear- compared to a few years ago the latest releases are MUCH more user friendly. Take your time and get to know it (prefrably on a spare machine, to avoid -er- mishaps). Before you know it you will be a Linux Guru and laugh in disdain at the poor Windows slaves (Well maybe not quite).

In anycase Linux is getting better, even without Lindows you can enjoy it, and play most of the Open GL games. Just keep your Windows handy for the rest

Hi, do you guys program? I was wondering if I should put somthing like Linux or Unix on a smaller PC (not games capable) and just focus on coding on it. What´s the best programming-friendly OS?

I know linux can be scary at first, but just take baby steps, and try and avoid Lindows.
rather get something like Mandrake or redhat.

Celebhir: linux is a great programing platform, you will love the coding because there is such a varity, C, C++, etc, give linux a look at, you might even find it a nice platform to program on aswell
You lie!

Suse 8 has a free version available and quote:

´SuSE offers the possibility to install SuSE Linux free of charge directly from the FTP server. The function scope of FTP versions is virtually the same as that of the "normal" version. Merely a few program packages have been excluded due to license reasons. The installation support is not included either.´

That quote is from the OFFICIAL SuSe page

Surely because Lindows nothing more than a user friendly Linux you can download the source code because of the GNU licence ? If so just download it and compile and you´ll have free Lindows.
wow. and since when did GNU per se refers to an OS developed by RMS, unless you know something most of us didn´t realize for the last 10 years.

If you want to learn how to use linux rather use Mandrake Linux http://www.mandrake.com

or use RedHat which is now known as Fedora http://fedora.redhat.com
