I am soon going to upgrade my PC, but I can´t decide what to get.
I am currently running a AMD 7100+ XP; 512 DDR (333) RAM; GeForce4MX 440, and other.

which of the following would be the better choice?

A new display card or a new CPU and more memory?

Don´t even suggest ATI.

Keep in mind that I use my PC primarily for 3d Apps (like 3DsMAX, But I do also wish to play NEW games as well.

Upgrade your grphics card. The Ti4200 8X is a really nice card, going for around R2500. Your CPU will need to be upgraded soon, but I think your graphics card is higher priority!

Yeah, I agree with AssDisease, your gfx card is the most important of those. Go for the highest Titanium series you can afford. The higher you get, the further it´ll push back your next upgrade. A 2100+ is still decent, and the RAM is fine. Don´t bother with RAM unless you are maxing it out and starting to use swap space. The performance difference between 333MHz and 400MHz RAM is not noticeable really.
I thought what I'd do was, I'd pretend I was one of those deaf-mutes.

Geez!
I wish I had an 7100+ that thing must motor!
How do you keep that thing cool! My 2000+ Runs at 45C that thing must be hot enough to melt glass on!
Just joking!
You`re probable got a 1700+ Which will do fine with a better graphic card ie a GeForce 4200Ti! You`ll score between 7300 - 8000
3d marks witch is acceptable!
The next thing I would upgrade is the CPU don`t get anything slower then a 2100+ cause you won`t see a big enouf speed diffrance!

Happy spending!

Snowmonkey, Yes, sorry. I seem to be slightly dyslexic when it comes to typing.

I do have a 1700+; and I also forgot to mention that I use my PC for 3D animation and other graphic work (3dsMAX, Photoshop, Lightwave, Photoshop, freehand, flash, etc) as well. would this influence the change in upgrade?

Hmm? You use your PC for stuff like Maya and 3dMax. Programs like that require high performance cards like the 9700...oops

dude - the best thing for you to do is upgrade your card which is logical and whichever card you prefer is your thing but if you want to stick with nvidia then id still go for a directx9 compatible card which means going to the (really expensive)5800 ultra for the upgrade to be meaningful in the apps that you want to use - though you will find that you will quickly bottleneck the vid card with such a small processor and will need to up that soon - so do the upgrade in the following order - vidcard/ram/cpu in order to get the most pleasant experience that you can get out of your computing with the applications that you are using - i just wish that i could afford all of those

plus id not upgrade the quality of the ram but rather the quantity since if you want to fly with those 3d apps that you are talking about - maya and 3dsmax love 1 gig of ram - while photoshop and the others will chug along with 512 megs

ok, how about the quadroFX cards out there?
I don´t mind the noise, but the geForceFX has just way too much hype for me to even remotely consider getting one.
(oh, and I am a poor student, but I´m pulling this off with my 21st!)

I can get you a quadro oh for only R12500
And no this isn`t a lie and yes I did write the right price!
So I think you should rather stick wit your 9700Pro for only 4G`s!

Cheers
