Core clock, Memory clock and FSB ?

Post by AndyJ »

What is a Core clock, Memory clock and FSB and what do they do?

Can they be tweaked and how?

Well, this can be explained for a Video card and for a Motherboard & CPU.

For Motherboard & CPU:

The core clock is the speed at which you processor runs, i.e. 2400mhz/2.4Ghz. Your memory clock is the speed at which your RAM runs, i.e 400Mhz. (well, actually it's 200Mhz, but effectively 400Mhz) The FSB (Front Side Bus) i.e. 200Mhz is multiplied by the multiplier i.e. 14 to give you your CPU speed of 2.8Ghz (in this case)

In terms of a Video Card:

The core clock would be the Speed of the card's main processor, i.e 500Mhz and the memory clock would be the speed of the memory i.e 1000Mhz (well, actually 500mhz, but effectively 1000Mhz)

Overclocking.

In terms of CPU, it can be overclocked in your BIOS by rainsing or lowering the FSB and Miultiplier. The video card can be overclocked in windows with apps like powerstrip or even in the drivers.

Does this help you?
That guy that used to mod cases. Now I take photos. True story.

so say ive got 3 GHz, my ram is DDR400 therefore actually 200 MHz my multiplier would be 15. but if say i entered a multiplier of 16 or higher would that still work. IE. DOES THE FSB * MULTIPLIER ALWAYS HAVE TO EQUAL THE CORE CLOCK SPEED.

WHAT IS BETTER TO DO, INCREASE THE FSB AND DECREASE THE MULTIPLIER OR DECREASE THE FSB AND INCREASE THE MULTIPLIER.

ONE LAST THING. HOW DO I INCREASE OR DECREASE MY FSB, IF POSSIBLE AT ALL.

It can normally be done via the BIOS, the exact location varies from mobo to mobo. Otherwise d/load ClockGen
