Is it safe to watercool my 6800GT?

Push it to the max but make sure that you keep it cool!

Is it safe to watercool my 6800GT?

Post by DAE_JA_VOO »

I've got a 6800GT and i want to watercool it.

I saw a thermaltake GPU waterblock for about R350, but it only cools the processor itself, not the memory. (and thermaltake sucks anyway). Is it safe to cool the core and leave the RAM bare? An engineer and PC enthusiast told me that the RAM on the 6800GT can rise to temps of 90 degrees without frying.

I also saw a cool Innovatek block that cools the core and RAM, but it's R1000, which is a bit rough.

Any ideas guys?

My I ask where you saw the thermaltake gpu cooler. I have the big water cooling solution and seen somewhere that you get a gpu cooler for it but so far I have seen a place selling them.

Try these: http://www.sybaritic.co.za/store/produc ... 4835b8b0f5

They should work alright presuming you have a case fan.

edit: alternatively, you could always make your own from old heatsinks you may have lying around.

Belive it or not, i saw the block at a HUGE fleamarket in PTA called Montana Traders. There's a shop ther called OUKA computers and they sell EVERYTHING thermaltake has to offer. with warranties and everything. But i wouldn't recommend it dude, you're gonna waste R350.

Take a look at synapsys.co.za they have a water block for a 6800. Specifically the Inovatek which also has ram coolers built in.

But carly, my question is whether it's safe or not to cool my 6800GT's core only, and not the RAM.

It depends on whether or not you are going to overclock the GFX card or not.

Yeah, i am. My 68GT can't seem to get past 400/1.1 with stable results, so now i want to watercool it and overclock it straight to hell.

Yes, your card will be fine. Get some decent heatsinks and if you want, an Antec VCool to blow cool air from the outside of the case to the actual card. Shouldnt be a problem at all.

Cool the GPU with water, and the mem with decent ramsinks.

Don't o/clock witout them.

Take care mounting the waterblock on the gpu, it is fragile, and make sure you have a proper contact pattern on the waterblock (gpu core impression) before you fire up the card.

Some of these have shims, which are thicker than what the core protrudes from the gpu, and may not make proper contack with block, that's why they use this grey thickish tim material.

Take care, use your common sense, and all should be ok. Don't overtighten block.

Have fun.
