Pipes

Post by Mal »

Ive been scanning through some of the threads on the forum, one being "6600GT Or 6800Le" and there is alot of reference made to pipes. What are these pipes? How are the opened? What is the advantages and disadvantages of manipulating these pipes?

Well its very simple, [UsMarshal looks up from smoking the peace pipe]. A , [UsM passes the pipe] Gpu can process one pixel per clock cycle per pipe. So the more pipes [Usm gets up and ducks under the aircon pipe] available the more pixels can be processed per clock cycle. More pipes, more performance. Like water pipes [Usm smokes the peace pipe again], more pipes, more water. So if u can unlock the additional pipes (|'s) on your card the faster your card will perform. Put that in ur pipe and smoke it.

I think I have the fastest piping hot video card available, 24 pipes!

It would also depend on some luck of course. LE and SE cards are usually the same as to counterparts minus some pipes. But the reason for the obmission of said pipes is because they gpu failed during stress testing with all of the pipes because one or two pipes are faulty. So they lock half the pipes and it still works but is now running at half it's speed. Thus the cheaper highend card is born. But here's the catch. If the demand for said cheaper cards is high enough they will have to use perfectly normal chips to supply the demand. And thus, if you are lucky you will buy one that has a fully functional chip, unlock the remaining pipes and score big time. If not, you get what you paid for. ;)

Ah, yes, clear as mud. So how exactly do you unlock pipes? Didn't get a key with my gfx card.

I have never tried to oc it more than the driver app will let me, but still I can go from 300 gpu to 475 and 550 ram to 650, also with no extra cooling and nothing more than 3 or 4 deg. change under stress.

It only go's up to about 45 deg. gpu and 44 deg ram, when I overclock.

Not at all. The worst that will happen is you will encounter some artifacts due to broken pipes. If that happens there's not much you can do anyway so just revert back to the original config. The only time it will overheat is if you overclock it too high without proper cooling.

Thanks, sorry am new to this! its quite facsinating! What is the standard usually for benchmarking? What is a common app used so that I can compare my current system to other ones? also, if i benchmark before opening pipes then after i should see quite a difference?
