Well I overclocked from 430/1200 to 480/1250

I now get 8690 in 3DMark05 and 17880 in 3DMark03
@ Nerevar: Don't clock it any higher, that is good, and very powerful for games. I doubt the card will last on that clocks and aircooloing for very long, so rather take it down to about 460/1250, and keep it there.

You have to realize that the cards that are supplied from BFG, for example, that comes factory clocked at 460/1300, uses handpicked (by BFG) cores, they have a select agreement with nVidia, as 1 or 2 others, and these gpu's run at the same temperatures at 460-480 as what some other brands do at 430.

I have done many tests, and spoke to quite a few top benchers, to verify this.

My own Gigabyte 7800GTX at 430 (stock) ran say, 47 deg C idle on a specific day. Out with that, in with my two BFG 7800GTX's, and they both ran 460 (stock), but idled at 42 deg C.

Same temps from both BFG's, but some 5deg C lower at a higher stock speed than the Gigabyte. a Few International guys observed the same trend, and so did RRA in Jozie.

So, it is not imagination, be very careful how far you press that card on air, rather provide good cooling, and monitor temps closely ;)

Just a caution.

I'll keep it on 450 then :)

I have 2 vantec pci dual fans on both sides of the 7800gtx and load is 55.

Need your knowledge again

with my 7800gtx fan mod, I ran a stress test for 3 hours on a very very hot day, my cpu with load @ 52, and on other days @ 41 load.

and still my 7800gtx stayed @ 55 load

running @ 460/1250
, I then took it up ( on the same day ) to about 490/1250, and load was 57.

is it safe to run @ those speeds and at that temp?

you talked about handpicked cores, is there a way I can check what 7800 core I have?

Is this the 256MB or the 512MB issue?

So ASUS or XFX?

I heard the XFX cards perform very well, but I am a ASUS fan.

As far as i know all 7800GTX's are made by nVidia (or at least a company comisioned by nVidia). You'll have noticed that all 7800GTX's PCB's are green (to my knowledge anyway). So it really doesn't matter which you choose. Look at pricing, availability, warranty, bundles etc. Some utilise a different heatsink/fan, which may be a deciding factor, as they can be quiter, cooler and allow more headroom for overclocking .
