I have several questions :

I am planning to upgrade my Duron 1.2Ghz to an Athlon XP 1700 + or higher. Before I go buying things I wanted to see if I could manage the removal & reinstallation of my older components, and have run into a few problem areas concerns.

1. I am having some trouble removing the heatsink off my processor, I am unsure as to how to go about this, is there any documentation or good site on undoing the heatsink clips? I have looked at the AMD site but it only focusses on the installation of the new components, not the removal of the old ones. I really wouldn´t want to damage anything try to force things which shouldn´t be forced.

2. Will the heatsink I that used to be on my Duron 1.2Ghz processor be sufficient for an Athlon XP 1700 + or higher? Do I need to buy another heatsink for a new processor?

3. Do I need a bigger PSU than 250W for a PC with an Athlon Processor? I currently have a 250W running a 5200RPM HDD, Geforce 4Ti 4200, network card, onboard sound, and 256 DDR RAM. Will the more powerful processor require a bigger PSU?
If you look carefully on the pin of the heat sink you will see a slot. In that slot you will put a phillips screw driver and push down quiet hard that will cause the HS to pop off.
It will work fine make sure to apply some thermal paste though
I would go with a 300watt but I`ve got the similar set. CD RW, Cd Rom, 2000+, Ti4200, 40Gig HDD all running of a 250 PSU so I`m sure you`ll be alright!

I always advise people to get more cooling rather than less, since it is relatively inexpensive and can save you a hell of a lot of money, time and frustration. Many new chips come packaged with a heatsink anyway, and always _always_ put new thermal paste on, otherwise the heatsink can end up being useless.
I thought what I'd do was, I'd pretend I was one of those deaf-mutes.

it seems your board is still running at 100 fsb. look for a jumper and hopefully a bit of info on the motherboard or at its website. set to 133fsb if you are sure that your cpu is cool.
