Internet sharing winxp

I have 2 pc´s running winxp. The network is peer to peer. Each pc has 100mbs network cards. I use a 56k modem and have enabled internet connection sharing. The problem is - the pc using the network to connect has an extremely slow connection. What can be done to speed it up? Everything else works fine.
