modem probs

Post by ripstorm »

My modem keeps disconnecting from the net and i dont have a clue why and sometimes it "hangs". I tried a modem booster to beef up the proxy settings...but no luck. What must I do?
Im using a internal Conexant HCF v90 56k data fax modem.

It´s not unusual for this to happen with dailup connections and I think in most cases it´s just poor service from your ISP but you could try using a "Keep Alive" tool which will simulate internet traffic and keep the connection alive. Here is a link to SpiderByte, I have never tried it before but I suppose it´s worth a try http://www.webattack.com/get/spiderbyte.shtml

Keep alive tools will only work if your service provider is disconnecting you because of a period of inactivity. Do you ever get disconnected while you are actually browsing or downloading? If you do then a keep alive tool won´t help.

It´s very unlikely to be a Hardware problem. Although, in some cases, changing to a different type of modem can help. It has for me. Have you tried getting an answer from your ISP ? Most Dialup users has this problem, and in some cases the Help Desk might be able to help but in most you just gotta live with it. From what I understand, the POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service) just can´t cope with the different technologies and has never been upgraded to do so.

You could try and set you connection speed a bit slower...just to test.
It could also be that your line is noisy and Telkom will be able to check that for you.
I would also report the prob to your ISP and it might be a good idea to dial up to another server, ask your ISP if they have alternative servers.

If all else fails...get a new modem.

Ok , to start with your modem is a software driven modem NOT hardware , you can try getting a better driver , also there is a program written for hsp and hcf modems called modem booster which does help alot to make it more stable , have a look here for great help - http://www.modem-help.co.uk/help/links.html these modems are very fussy when it comes to phone line quality so if you do decide to get a new modem DONT get a hcf hsp and such like modem you will have the same problems

OK this may seem stupid but I had this problem 2 once. After trouble shooting 4 hours I found that I ticked the disconnect after downloading e mail in my mail client so if it happens a couple of second after connecting check you mail client to see if the box is uncheck
