Kernel Panic - complains about cdrom

Post by le-Joker »

HI,

I am running Red Hat 9, on a dual Xeon Processor box with 2GB RAM and 200G disk space (Hardware Raid 5 config).

My problem is the kernel panics after a certain amount of time with an error relating to the cdrom. The time between panics is random, but can be estimated to be around 5 to 8 days uptime.

If I insert a (non-bootable) cdrom in the drive, and boot the machine, it works perfectly for months without having to be rebooted (untill the cd becomes covered in dust and can't be read properly). I have now resorted to leaving the cd in the drive, and cleaning the dust from it every couple of weeks.

Does anyone know why this would happen, or how I could fix this. The server is patched with the latest RH9 patches from the RH site.

Yup, tried that without success :?

The cdrom drive works 100%. I am sure it is a software issue, as I keep getting error messages in the log files complaing about missing cd.

Hence placing a cd in the drive solves the problem :?:
