What the hell is the "spread spectrum" options in the BIOS?

Something to do with frequencies.

Manual says disable when overclocking otherwise any short burst in current might cause the CPU to lockup.

It lets the bus speed float a little and is supposed to cut down on RF interference. It also will make your computer a little less stable, not good if you are overclocking the hell out of it.

no wonder I couldn't get the system stable when the FSB was anything above 200Mhz :?

Right, so I'll disable it, and check what speeds I can get out of the FSB now
