OverClocking - PROS|CONS

Post by DEeRaY »

Seeing as most of us are into overcloking our pcs i would just like to know what the benifits and the pitfalls are

Yes you get a performace increase anywere from 5% to 35% increase in speed, But what are the main cons about this

CPU life shortend, but what does this, the added voltage the increase in heat ?
What are the effects of long term overclocking, does this dammage your chip even more

id just like to find out the facts so i can wiegh the pros and cons up

Thanks

hmmm,

Pro's
bragging rights e.g. e-penis =)
Respect

Cons
Its a very expensive hobby
Component life shortened (in the longterm)
and there's ALWAYS the possibility of hardware failure

pros:

my frame rates took a huge increase when i oced to 3.6Ghz
extras bandwidth from ocing the bus from 800 to 920
pc alot more responsive.
major ocing possilble on stock HSF

cons:
shortened lifespan. ie (10 years becomes 5 years)
i upgrade my pc every 2 years anyway so this is not an issue for me

Ok but what i wanna know is what kills the hardware off
Is it running the chip @ higher voltages or the heat

Cause im looking into investing in watercooling...
So if the chip stays constantly cool does that mean your not killing it?

Well the temperature is the first cause:

http://www.overclockers.com/tips30/

I am running my 3700+ 2.2 Stock @ 2.6Ghz with stock volts so that is hardly damaging my CPU at all cause it idle's @ 26 and Prime95 loads @ 37c after 12hours prime. That is all on stock volts 1.4..

On your 3200+ you can get a great overclock fairly easily. What core is it though? Winchester? etc...

Also what watercooling kit you looking @

Yup its the winchester ...

There is a gigabyte watercooling system, checked it at rectron so im not too sure how much it costs yet .. but any suggestion would be cool :) especially non bulky ones. I wanne bealbe to carry it around with me :P

Hey and i would love it if the pro can tell me what my CPU can hit and how
BTW: current cooling is GIGABYTE Rocket 3D HSF
THANKS!

Hmm a winnie would need a bit of volts to clock to try 1.5v's 2400Mhz 240*10 with ram on devider or whatever is needed ;)

If that works lower votls higher them etc.

Stay below 1.55v's though i would stay under 1.5v's though for 24/7 but you can test for a short while @ 1.55's or so wont harm it at all.

Also watch temp with Prime95 Running id keep it under 50c load. To be safe 45c load
