Suse 9.2 internal moden not connecting

Post by transparent »

Hi ALL

I've just installed suse 9.2 and yast installs my modem as (smartlink)
it's an internal modem and under windows its installed as the same!
The driver cd i got with it cannot be read in my CD drive!
SP2 installed the driver and works fine!
But now in suse I've setup my provider information using modem0 but when i say dial in nothing happens.

still quite new to linux so Any help would be great!

P.S i've heard that linux doesnt "like" internal modems??

Well it's not so much that Linux does'nt like internal modems, but more that internal modems are'nt real modems!

Internal modems also known as winmodems are mostly designed for windows, this means they pass most of the work to the operating system. This also explains why most external modems are faster.

Add to this that most hardware manufacturers don't like showing their source code for drivers and this means that Linux programmers have to guess most of the time. Considering Linux supports more than 90% of hardware, I think they've done a good job.

I have a smartlink as well, and it doesn't work on UbuntuLinux, I have'nt found a suitable solution yet.

The best you can do is go to http://www.linmodems.org/

Also, the way you setup your connection is important, the best way is pppconfig, checkout: https://wiki.ubuntu.com//DialupModemHowto

That howto is for Ubuntu, though it could apply to others.

What is this "Microsoft" that you speak of? Washing powder? Coffee? Correction fluid? I can't figure it out. Anyone else know?
