Can anyone tell me if I require an Access point when I connect 2x PC's using wireless LAN cards? (Peer 2 peer)

If you wireless cards support peer-2-peer networking (as far as I know, most do), then you're good to go!

The setup would be the same as if you were connecting two PC's via a crossover cable...

I believe it's called Ad Hoc mode, and yeah it should be fine. Some equipment conflicts and refuses to connect with other without a base station, but unless you are unlucky, it should be fine
