Cool Broadband Speed Test
Re: Cool Broadband Speed Test
Good old SA!
Re: Cool Broadband Speed Test
That was from my office fibre in the early days of it being available in SA.
I had 100/100 in Cape Town at home and locally I always got around 90/90, but international, especially to Europe was always quite terrible. I find my international bandwidth better in AUS.
Which type of NBN connection do you have? I'm currently on HFC.

Re: Cool Broadband Speed Test
Yeah those 950MB plans are insane - Ron, well played!
Re: Cool Broadband Speed Test
Is it usable internationally though?
Ron, do a test but specify a server in London and then another in the USA somewhere then post the results.
They will still no doubt be very decent, but interesting comparing local to international bandwidth.

Re: Cool Broadband Speed Test
Unfortunately, you'll have to wait until NZ lockdown ends for me to get an accurate result. Speedtests aren't accurate over WiFi (because then local latency and contention factors in), and the desktop PC is out of action: rather annoyingly, the PSU died on Day 1 of lockdown. (It had started being problematic a few days before, but I didn't diagnose it in time before lockdown kicked off.) MBIE doesn't think that PSUs are "essential goods", so I can't replace it for now.

Yes, that's very much an essential service.
Speaking of which, MBIE has now classified certain computer equipment as "essential" given that everyone is working from home now, so replacement PSU has been ordered. Hopefully it makes it by Easter weekend (I ordered a few extra things while I was at it, and one of the items isn't in stock).

Re: Cool Broadband Speed Test
OK, desktop PC is back up and running, so some speedtests that I've just run:
Auckland
Los Angeles
New York
London
Cape Town
Wonder how much Netflix and chill is affecting international bandwidth... will retry the US ones early AM and see if there's a difference in the results. As far as I'm aware, there's yet another WACS cable break which, if it hasn't been resolved yet (haven't been keeping tabs) would definitely have affected the Cape Town result.

No, Capetown is on reduced electrons due to social distancing.
Re: Cool Broadband Speed Test
Nice one Ron! Crazy good international speeds. Yeah the link to SA is always pretty rubbish, it’s always a pain talking to my folks on Facetime.
