I am needing to purchase a new PSU for my current system (see signature). I know it is overkill but I am looking to get the Corsair HX1050 (1050W). It is pricy but that aside, is it ok to have a fair bit more power in reserve, or will I be creating problems for myself by installing a PSU that will never run more than 60-70% of its full capability?
My alternative is the Corsair GS800 which is a fair amount cheaper but is not a modular system.
I am wanting the HX1050 because it is a modular cabling system. Also, don't want to drag my fairly decent new system down with a cheap PSU.

Re: PSU buying advice
What is your rig your looking at? There is something called efficiency. Going for the biggest PSU can be a waste of power. I'm running a 750W coolermaster GX and my system is rather beefy but its good enough for what I have. Another friend has a gtx680 and i5 running on a 550W real power cooler master PSU. Unless you planning on SLI or Xfire a 650-750W should be ideal.

Re: PSU buying advice
I was using a 800W PSU. I am not running SLI at the moment but I do have a GTX680, 3 hard disks (1 is a SSD) and an overclocked Core I7 4770K. Also a Corsair Hydro H100i closed water cooling system/pump. Lots of USB connections too. I know I could probably get away with 750W easily at the moment but I can't find a PSU that I can just walk in and buy that also offers a modular cable system except for the Corsair 1050. (I want my PC tidy on the inside, no unnecessary cables). I need to buy something today as I HAVE to get my PC up and running this weekend - going on holiday and all my travel docs are on it.
Main question is - will excess power have a performance impact on the PC? Or will it just be a little less efficient (will make Eskom sad )

Re: PSU buying advice
No performance issues, but a PSU is usually most efficient at 50% usage.

Re: PSU buying advice
Great, thanks D3PARTED,
Off to get the Corsair 1050 then. Going to bust the bank a little but at least I know that the PSU will not be a weak link in my system come future upgrade time!
