So I need storage space and dont want to add more drives to my PC and mess up airflow etc as I'm really happy with the way my PC runs.
So I'm going with an external solution. These are my choices...
1 - http://www.ple.com.au/ViewItem.aspx?Inv ... goryID=772
Price: $729 (about R7K)
Storage: 8TB
PROS: True NAS, pre-tested and assembled, plug-n-play, 3 year warranty, one logical disk in RAID0 or RAID1
CONS: less disk space than other option
2 - http://www.ple.com.au/ViewItem.aspx?Inv ... goryID=209 with 4 of these http://www.ple.com.au/ViewItem.aspx?Inv ... goryID=725
Price: $747
Storage: 12TB
PROS: 12 mutha farken GB's, later upgrades to 4TB drives means I could go to 16TB down the track! Apparently supports individual, JBOD, RAID 0, 1, 3, 5, or 10
CONS: Not NAS, more DIY, 2yr warranty on individual parts
SO...

Re: NAS vs mass storage - help me decide
Question on my part are you planning on using either one as a DLNA media streaming device? If so be prepared to be in for a world of mkv converting . Neither one of those devices will have the processor power to stream mkv files and will require the files to be converted to mp4 or avi. So just be aware of that...
Better option would be to go for one of those HP Micro Servers or something similar for media streaming and storage: http://www8.hp.com/za/en/products/proli ... b=features
However if all you want is network storage with no media capability I would look at your second option since it can have individual drives and my luck with WD is not that great... <_<

That's like 15 movies. Seems a lot of money to me for so little space.hamin_aus wrote:...12 mutha farken GB's...

Nope have WDTV's which are great for playing MKV's over the network. Just want a place to dump files.Anakha56 wrote:Question on my part are you planning on using either one as a DLNA media streaming device?
Wont go with a media server for the same reason I wont go with a Synology or QNap setup - too much work.
There is a special on Western Digital Red NAS 4TB drives that has probably solved the dilemma for me

$249 each plus $139 for the caddie means 8TB space for $100 less than the sealed unit. well bargained and done

If streaming is not an issue then just go for the most TB / AU$. That's what I would do, and I have a tertiary degree, so you know I make sense.
