I've got an irritating noise coming from my headphones. It's not the headphones, as I've had it with the previous set as well.
I've read that it might be interference from something, but what. I've got nothing that might interfere with the sound card. It does it with the onboard soundcard, as well as the (el-cheapo) Genius PCI card I bought.
Where can I start with the elimination of this noise?

Well it would help if you can tell us what sort of irritating noise it is. Static, popping, grinding, screeching, humming? There are many sounds with many causes.

many sources, but i always start by suspecting the drivers... start in safe mode... if the problem disappears.. .driver...
if not, good luck...
confirm if S/PDIF is enabled... should be disabled unless you're using it... although i've only ever seen this "fix" work twice before...

Have had that sort of noise with some old pc's before, came down to a driver issues there.
But I also have had this being caused by some usb devices before(that was a more high pitched whine though). Particularly the front panel jacks when you have a usb hard drive connected and are busy copying files to and from it.
