QNAP NAS + WD Red Drives = Death

Post by Anakha56 »

Greetings All,

So I thought I would share something that we have been observing at my work regarding a NAS solution and hard drives.

So last month we bought one of these:

A QNAP NAS device. The description reads:
High-performance 4-bay NAS server for SMBs
Well that is the header summary but if you want to read about it follow the link :P. We combined this NAS with these lovely HDD's

WD Red

The new color of NAS.
WD Red hard drives are designed and tested for compatibility in the unique 24x7 operating environment and demanding system requirements of home and small office NAS.
So we installed all 4 of the drives and had everything running well. Then about 2 weeks ago the drive in the second bay started failing with read/write errors, we took the drive out and waited for a replacement. Once the replacement was in we rebuilt the array (due to outside influences not due to the drive failure) and thought all was well in the world. Today we see the drive in bay 3 now giving read errors .

So now we are scratching our heads and wondering if we just got a faulty batch or if these drives really are not designed for a NAS system.

This thread is basically a experience sharing thread to see if anyone else has had issues like this before :). Should note that it is possible that any drive & NAS device would have the same problem I just listed the products we are using :)
