probiotics = actual bacteria
prebiotics = food for bacteria

usually when the bad bacteria get too great in numbers your gut gets irritated and its flushed out thats all, very rarely it will cause damage

We are always give probiotics when taking antibiotics - the reason is to replenish the good bacteria in your gut. You can get really sick if you don't.

Doo - Riccoffee has part chicory - not so yummy. But I do believe it is healthier for one than pure coffee. But as you say - it could be a placebo effect. Much of what we do is.

Well if you're going to be drinking instant, you're on your own!

A surprising amount of modern pseudoscience is coming out of the environmental sector. Perhaps it should not be so surprising given that environmentalism is political rather than scientific.

you must never take a probiotic and antibiotic at the same time the probiotic is when you have completed the antibiotic course

The best blend I've come across is Blue Mountain, specifically the "Roast and Grind" brand that I used to be able to get from Spar.

An incredibly close second is the Columbian blend from Woolworths. It's a limited edition, but it's been around for months. I don't see it disappearing any time soon.

Then why do doctors always prescribe them together? Surely they should know what they are doing? And this is not one doctor - I have had many in my life time and they all do it

Because they doctors, they have only done basic pharmacology ... thats why. Besides it makes perfect sense you taking 2 capsules, one that kills bacteria and one that contains bacteria. Does that make any sense to take them at the same time?
