Post Counts
As some of you may have already noticed we have made a change to your post counts.
No, your new post count is not thumb-sucked...
We have changed the forums so that only posts in the "PCFORMAT", "G3AR," "WIRED" and "PLAY" sections go towards your post count.
Since this is after all a gaming, hardware and tech focussed forum it's only right that posts in those sections be rewarded.
Chillout posts are still as encouraged as they ever were and we are in no way taking any action to curb those.
We will however come down hard on spam and off topic posts on the sections that count.
Please post there responsibly.
As soon as Stu gathers his wits I'm sure he and Ron will update the rules etc

Re: Post Counts
Well... this certainly changes things, but I can see the reasoning behind it.
It will be interesting to note post counts minus spam- I think some people are going to be mildly surprised.

rather funny that about more than half the people on the first page of highest post count are inactive or banned

Re: Post Counts
No, I meant in a way that differentiates the spammers from the rest. Chances are (for those aware of it) that a technical post from say, Anakha, would carry more weight than one from CapNemo, for instance - no offence Cap. I'm not saying more correct or more relevant, but there's a fair chance, when the opinions differ, that Anakha's would be chosen in this example. Or I might be completely off my rocker herejamin_za wrote:do elaborate...SykomantiS wrote:this certainly changes things

Anakha56 has roughly 1k posts in the AMD vs Intel thread discussing the finer points of animal husbandry as it applies to AMD fans...SykomantiS wrote:a technical post from say, Anakha, would carry more weight than one from CapNemo
i don't think post count means anything... we're all spammers, (some certainly more prolific than others)

Hopefully this move will help in generating more traffic to the relevant areas.

Re: Post Counts
Are there actually people that take the whole post count thing seriously? Excepting for Tribble and KK of course.
And the For Sale section.
And there's something wrong with the new system. There's NO way I've spammed the tech threads that much.

I am over the moon. I cannot express how happy you have made me. Something I have been begging for since I joined. For me - this is the best news you could give me today!!!!! Now I can relax and not worry about stupid spam queen titles (There is no smilie with a big enough smile)
To Doo's last comment - agreed. I am now more likely to avoid the tech threads to keep my post count where it is.

Re: Post Counts
So - does this mean that you have to have 50 posts in the "PCFORMAT", "G3AR," "WIRED" and "PLAY" sections in order to advertise on the forums?

Re: Post Counts
Your displayed post count determines your eligibility to post in the For Sale section; therefore, posts in the Chill section do not count towards the Classified minimum post count requirement.doo_much wrote:So - does this mean that you have to have 50 posts in the "PCFORMAT", "G3AR," "WIRED" and "PLAY" sections in order to advertise on the forums?
Please use the "Report this post" button; the moderators will then investigate. (They can't be everywhere at once and are thus reliant on reported posts to pick up what they might have missed.)Tribble wrote:No they let someone with 23 posts post a sale

I assumed you controlled that through the board permissions and that too had changed. Reported.Ron2K wrote:Please use the "Report this post" button; the moderators will then investigate. Re: Post Counts
Actually, controlling permissions via post counts is rather clunky. There is a system where newly registered users are placed in a certain user group and removed from said group when they hit an admin-defined post count threshold; the problem is that, at present, only ONE threshold can be configured. Currently, this system is being used to hold the first post of newly-registered users in a moderation queue to catch spammers (i.e. the post has to be approved by a moderator before becoming visible) -- this means that the Classified moderation is, sadly, a manual process.
EDIT: If the Classified sections become problematic, what would likely happen is that we extend the moderation queue so that the initial post of new threads also has to get moderated, regardless of post count. It would likely have to be really problematic before something like this were to happen, though -- at present, the volume of dodgy Classified posts is low enough to not make it worth doing.

Re: Post Counts
Err, question, Ron. If I understand correctly, you only catch the 1st post of a new member? So what happens if said new member posts somewhere else before their 1st post is processed? Or am I understanding you incorrectly? Does it hold all new posts from the 1st, or only the 1st?
Just out of curiosity.

Re: Post Counts
Sorry, should have made it a little more clear -- it catches all posts until one gets approved. (Though, new users typically make only one initial post.)SykomantiS wrote:Err, question, Ron.
