Hey Guys
I've been using my old 19'' LCD with a resolution of 1440x900 screen for 4 years now and i think i need an upgrade.I definitely want an IPS screen. I've seen them on display and they look gorgeous. So i need an IPS Panel screen, full HD, LED and no bigger than 24'' or smaller than 21''. Budget is R3000.
Need an IPS Panel Screen for under R3000

Have a look at the Asus PA238Q. There's a small review on it in the December issue of PCF:)

I thought that was an absolute bargain, but it appears they got the conversion wrong in the first review...Mickzter97 wrote:I was thinking of getting it when i saw it in the Dec issue for R2800, but in the Jan issue the price was R4,500...Why

And it is the same for a number of other pices of hardware. I have read the exact same review of a certain Asus board 3 times. I am really disappointed in the jan issue of PCF......and it is rather short too

Ja, its just 2 features, and a whole lots of hardware reviews, though i do like the hardware reviews. My favourite issue is Oct 2011. Love the Dream PC part.THE_STIG wrote:And it is the same for a number of other pices of hardware. I have read the exact same review of a certain Asus board 3 times. Found the LG IPS S235V 23" LED for R2600 at Landmark PC. Anyone know if its good as the PA238Q.

Re: Need an IPS Panel Screen for under R3000
I too spotted that Asus PA238Q review and did some serious Googling. I was also seriously disappointed to find that the original review price was way, way out. AsusTek RSA do not currently import the PA238Q - just the PA246Q at a much higher price.
I did manage to track down one local source (WantItAll.co.za) but their site noted that the monitors were all imported from the USA and, as a result of exchange rate fluctuations, their quoted prices ranged from around R4900 to R5200. The combination of price and potential lack of local support put me off.
As a result, I gave up on the PA238Q and also looked around at other 23" IPS/LED options at the ~R3000 mark....
What I found in the 23" to 24" IPS/LED range:
HP XW477A4 ZR2440w Performance 24" IPS/LED: ~R6800 (too much)
Dell UltraSharp U2412M 61cm 24'' IPS/LED: ~R3900 (more than I wanted to spend)
LG IPS236V-pn 23" 1920x1080 23" IPS/LED: ~R2800 (on the money)
So, I opted for the LG and have had it for 2 weeks now.
I also got myself a Datacolor Spyder3 Elite calibration kit and, after proper calibration, I am very pleased with this LG monitor.
A good website for checking out any IPS monitor where photo editing is likely to be on the menu is the Pentax Photo Gallery where they have some amazing pictures that really benefit from the use of an IPS monitor.

Besides photographic usage, I had been a little bit concerned about the 5ms response time when used for watching movies (I'd had a 2ms Samsung BX2331 which gave reasonable motion reproduction, but its colour reproduction was not great). Watching Full HD movies on this LG is good with the motion aspects acceptable and more than outweighed by the great colour presentation.
As far as the LG IPS235V-bn is concerned, I have no idea as to how it differs from the IPS236V-pn apart from the 236 being a "slimmer" panel design.
I hope that helps cast some light on the subject for you...

(Edit - just realized I necrod, can't believe nobody told me about this thread )
Hey all. Have just spoken to Michael and it turns out the monitor was to be marked as an import at the R2800 price but the changes never went through - our mistake. The second, higher price is indeed off wantitall.
I'm sorry for the repeats, there should be an initial review, a smaller summary or sometimes the full review again in a big round-up for the folks who missed the mag/convenience etc. but never as a repeat review which I thought was the case. I also apologise for the inconvenience this #$%^ monitor is causing - I don't understand why Asus are not offering this monitor locally.
In addition I see folks are bashing us again for UK content on other forums too but I really don't see how else we could review relevant products on time. You guys most of all should be familiar with the local supply chain, they don't jump for us either and we actually have to pay for the UK content.
Referring to the original question about an IPS, Mustek have re-branded panels and TVs for peanuts.
